From the Executive Director of the Fido Standard

Brett McDowell

There’s a lot of great information in this month’s newsletter such as recaps on our new partnership with GSMA and how we’re engaging with NIST’s Cyber Security Framework – but I’m particularly keen to highlight the strategic significance of FIDO’s two newest Board Members; LINE and Raonsecure.
With over 600 million registered users, LINE is one of the fastest growing social platforms in the world and the market leader in Japan and Taiwan – with a history of innovation in messaging, bots and more. The fact that a large, innovative service provider such as LINE not only joined FIDO at the highest level but also pre-announced their plans to build FIDO authentication into their platform bodes very well for the ongoing growth of the FIDO ecosystem.
Our other new Board Member this month, Raonsecure, is also based in Asia, with headquarters in South Korea. Raonsecure is a critical IT leader who has already been directly involved in FIDO-enabling many of the commercial services in Korea since their government first declared their support for innovative technologies to secure their citizen identity infrastructure in 2014 (and which has been reaffirmed by the newly elected President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in).  Korea is already one of the most active FIDO ecosystems in the world, and with Raonsecure choosing to play a more strategic role in the Alliance, it is only going to get more active in the months ahead.
Thanks again for your ongoing interest and support of the FIDO Alliance – we’ll hope to see you at one of our an upcoming events!

New Liaison Relationship with GSMA to Explore How FIDO Authentication Fits with Mobile Connect

“How does FIDO Authentication fit with Mobile Connect?” We’ve heard this question with growing frequency since this year’s Mobile World Congress, and it also was a core topic of discussion at our FIDO seminars earlier this month in Paris and Barcelona. In order to help fully address that question, we are pleased to announce a new liaison partnership with GSMA, the organization representing mobile operators worldwide. Together, we will explore how FIDO Authentication and Mobile Connect fit together from both a technical and market perspective.
