Former Navy rear admiral to lead Carnegie Mellon institute's cybersecurity division

PITTSBURGH Feb. 1, 2017 Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute today announced the appointment of Edward H. (Ned) Deets, III as director of the SEI's CERT Cybersecurity Division. Deets assumes leadership following the retirement of Richard Pethia, who founded CERT, the world's first computer security incident response team, at the SEI in 1988.

Deets joined the SEI in 2012 as CERT deputy director, Defense Cyber Solutions. In 2013 he was named the founding director of the SEI's Software Solutions Division.

"The nation's defense, homeland security, and intelligence communities face an ever changing landscape of persistent cybersecurity threats and operate in a diverse and complex risk environment," said Dr. Paul Nielsen, SEI director and CEO. "We are pleased to have someone with Ned's experience and understanding of the unique challenges confronting the Department of Defense, civil government, and the private sector to lead the division."

Deets retired with the rank of rear admiral after 32 years of service in the Navy. His final command tour was the Naval Network Warfare Command in Virginia Beach, Va.

He is a graduate of Duke University and a distinguished graduate of the National War College. He and his wife Gini are natives of Charlottesville, Va.; they have two sons.

"This new leadership opportunity is a great honor," said Deets. "For nearly 30 years, the cybersecurity mission of the CERT Division has been at the forefront of our nation's cyber defense. I am confident that our incredibly talented team will continue to respond to immediate threats and rise to the challenge of anticipating future threats to our national security."
