Port Canaveral CEO John Walsh to open March 17-19 Port Security Operations Conference
The MacDonnell Group of Halifax, Nova Scotia has announced that John Walsh, CEO of Port Canaveral, will deliver the opening presentation and welcome remarks at its 2015 Port Security Operations Conference and Expo (PSOCE) which will take place at Port Canaveral on March 17-19. Walsh is expected to discuss the Port’s impressive growth from 2009, when it commissioned an Economic Impact Study by seaport consulting firm Martin and Associations, to the present.
In the years since the 2009 study, according to the Port’s annual reports, Canaveral has become the fastest-growing cruise port in Florida and Port revenues have smashed old records. The three-year growth spurt was reflected in the community impact: Job creation from Port business rose nearly 30 percent; local purchasing climbed almost 50 percent; revenue generated for local businesses escalated nearly 75 percent.
In 2012, the total annual impact upon the regional and local economy from Port business activity reached $2 billion, and in the following year, the Melbourne Regional Chamber of Central Florida made Port Canaveral co-recipient of its 2013 impact award, presented to Brevard County businesses with a profound impact on the local economy.
Annual reports also showed NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has been working with Canaveral proactively on studies related to extending rail service through their property to service the port's docks. The Florida Department of transportation, the transportation Planning organization and other regional and state planning groups have growing Port Canaveral clearly included in their strategic initiatives and growth plans, and the first joint Board Meeting of the greater Orlando Aviation Authority and Canaveral Port Authority took place in early 2014 to discuss shared issues.
Port Canaveral’s close relationship to military operations goes back to its very beginning when the Navy was the first to recognize the value of an inlet and port at this location. today, Port Canaveral provides logistic support to the Military Sealift Command (MSC) and the naval ordnance test Unit (NOTU), and is home to a U.S. Coast guard Station.
According to the Port Security Operations Conference & Expo (PSOCE), Mr. Walsh intends to describe many new initiatives on the Port’s drawing board, ranging from discussions with the Air Force and Navy on additional joint land and facility use to meeting with cruise lines, assisting local hoteliers and retailers and building Port-of-call business.
