White House cybersecurity director to speak on critical infrastructure protection

Samara Moore, the director of Cybersecurity Critical Infrastructure Protection with the White House National Security Staff will speak at an upcoming lecture at the New York University (NYU) Polytechnic School of Engineering entitled “Reducing the Nation's Cyber Risk: White House Insights on the President's Critical Infrastructure Framework.” The lecture will take place on Monday, March 10, 2014 at the NYU-Poly Pfizer Auditorium in the Dibner Building. It will begin with a networking breakfast and will include a lecture, panel discussion, and an audience Q & A session.

The lecture will include a discussion of the new National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cyber security framework and how it will impact critical infrastructure throughout the U.S. The NIST cyber security framework, released in February 2014, is a part of the Obama Administration’s Cybersecurity Initiative that aims to secure the nation’s critical infrastructure. Critical infrastructure and businesses are encouraged to adopt the recommendations in the framework.

In addition to Director Moore, the lecture will also feature Bob Kolasky, the director of strategy and policy with the Office of Infrastructure Protection at the U.S. DHS, Jon Boyens, a senior advisor on information security in the Information Technology Laboratory at NIST, Manny Cancel, vice president of information resources at ConEdison, and Chris Boyer, assistant vice president of global public policy at AT&T Services.

The lecture is the fourth part of a series of cybersecurity and privacy related lectures sponsored by both the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering. Previous lectures in the series included “Cyberspace Allies,” “Defending Cyberspace,” and “Reclaim Your Name.” The event will also be streamed live at People attending the event remotely may also participate in the lecture by submitting questions via email at [email protected] or Twitter at @cyberlecture.
