CBP to buy four million rounds of 12 Gauge shotgun ammunition

Remington 870 can use
12 Gauge shotgun ammo

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) intends to procure two million rounds per year of 12 Gauge slug shotgun “standard” ammunition for use by its agents and other DHS components, plus another two million rounds per year of the “reduced recoil” version of the same ammunition.

“This ammunition will be provided to all Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and agents and will be used throughout the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii and other US Territories and possessions,” explains a presolicitation notice issued by CBP on September 18.

CBP intends to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) on or about October 31 for a full and open competition to win an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract, says the notice.

According to a CBP statement of work, the reduced recoil slug should have a projectile with a “1 ounce Foster design;” a head constructed of solid brass; shells whose heads shall be stamped with the manufacturer’s name, symbol, initials and gauge designation; tubes constructed of plastic; and velocity of no less than 1,100 feet per second and no more than 1,375 feet per second.

The shells should function in the Remington 870 (14-inch choke barrel) weapon, says the notice.

CBP will require a sample size of 2,000 rounds for its First Article Test (FAT) and another 1,000 rounds for each Lot Acceptance Test (LAT).
