Homeland security expert Chuck Brooks to serve as judge of 2013 Border Security Awards

Chuck Brooks

Chuck Brooks, vice president and client executive for the Department of Homeland Security at Xerox and a well-known discussion leader and participant in homeland security and other discussion groups on LinkedIn, has agreed to serve as lead judge in GSN’s 2013 Border Security Awards Program, according to an announcement today by Jacob Goodwin, GSN’s editor-in-chief.

“It would be very hard to find a more qualified person than Chuck Brooks for the job,” said Goodwin. “He’s been a high-ranking government insider in the Department of Homeland Security and VP of R&D at Rapiscan Systems, a leader in explosives detection, as well as other border security assignments.”

Brooks is former Adjunct Faculty at Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies where he taught a graduate level course on "Congress and Homeland Security." He also has an MA in International Relations from the University of Chicago and a BA in Political Science from DePauw University. (Goodwin noted that Brooks will recuse himself from the awards category in which his former employer, Rapiscan, has submitted an entry.)

In addition to his many other credentials, Brooks served as the First Director of Legislative Affairs for the Science and Technology Directorate of the Department of Homeland Security. He also served six years as a Defense and Foreign Advisor to the late Senator Arlen Specter.

GSN’s Border Security Awards Program was created to salute three groups in the border security field. These are the vendor companies that produce the most innovative and technologically advanced products and solutions used in border security; the federal, state and local government agencies that develop information-sharing programs, patrol the borders, secure our ports of entry, perform dramatic rescues and dangerous arrests, interdictions and seizures; and individual agents in border security, whether for federal, state or local agencies, who have demonstrated exceptional bravery, leadership or service to country in their border security duties.

The Platinum, Gold and in some categories Silver Awards will be announced in a special March 12 edition of GSN’s Border Security Weekly e-newsletter and at the Border Security Expo in Phoenix, AZ, which will take place on March 12 and 13.

In addition to thanking Chuck Brooks for being the lead judge of the awards program, Goodwin also expressed GSN’s appreciation to system integrator Telephonics for serving as lead Sponsor of the 2013 Border Security Awards Program. Telephonics is a world-class provider of integrated surveillance systems incorporating ground-based radar, ground surveillance systems, mobile surveillance systems, maritime surveillance systems, all of which leverage the company’s expertise in providing perimeter protection, integrated monitoring and communications systems to address a wide variety of homeland security applications, including airports, seaports, critical infrastructure and border protection.
