U.S. provides nuclear consequence management training in Israel
Israeli nuclear researchers participated in a training course on Consequence Management (I-CM) led by the U.S. national nuclear security experts.
The training, held in the Soreq Nuclear Research Center (SNRC) during the week of January 7, was attended by 25 Israeli participants, said the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which sponsored the course.
Research at Soreq focuses on introduction and incorporation of radiation-based techniques for practical use, like developing equipment for nuclear medicine and radio-pharmaceutics, as well as testing and developing methods to detect contraband and security-threat materials.
“The training is part of an ongoing bilateral cooperation between NNSA and Israel,” said Joseph Krol, NNSA associate administrator for emergency operations. “The training provided participants the opportunity to learn how to respond to a radiological terrorism event and builds capacity to combat nuclear and radiological terrorism. This training also highlights NNSA's partnership with the international community to improve nuclear and radiological emergency response.”
According to NNSA, the course was primarily intended for personnel working with radiation emergency response, with an aim to provide attendees with information and data on means and methods for setting up and establishing a monitoring and assessment program following a radiological terrorism event. Participants received hands-on equipment training in techniques for monitoring as well as instruction in data collection and analysis, said the agency. The training was provided by professionals from NNSA and U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories, it said.
NNSA said its Office of Emergency Operations currently collaborates with more than 80 foreign governments and 10 international organizations with projects ranging from providing assistance to foreign governments in improving their emergency preparedness and response programs, to joint collaborative activities that improve emergency management infrastructure worldwide.
