CIA rolls out mobile app Web site

The Central Intelligence Agency unveiled a new mobile Web site that provides a number of apps for public busers, including on-the-go electronic access to exhibits contained in its restricted museum at its Virginia headquarters.

The CIA noted the the new mobile site on newly-designed Office of the Director for National Intelligence (ODNI) Web site on Aug. 6.

It said the mobile launch was “in response to the growing use of mobile devices…” and said “readers can now access mobile-friendly versions of materials on their small screens…”

Those materials include quick leadership, mission and history facts, press releases dating back to 2010, career and job information, organizational overviews and contact information.

Another app is a “CIA Museum” that gives the public access to some of the artifacts and stories from the agency’s bricks and mortar museum facility. The CIA Museum, located on the agency’s McLean, VA campus, isn’t open to the public, but mobile Web users can access pictures and information on some of its exhibits on technology and history.

The museum’s online gallery site rolled out a new face on July 26. The new section, according to the agneyc, has a more modern look, improved navigation, an interactive timeline, new videos, descriptions of an additional 100 artifacts and expanded access to the Agency’s historical collections.

The agency said online visitors to the new gallery can read about its role in the hunt for Usama Bin Ladin; see how the Cold War-era CIA used a disguised deep sea mining ship, the Glomar Explorer, during a highly secret six-year effort to retrieve a sunken Soviet submarine from the Pacific Ocean floor; and learn how the Agency used a carefully constructed ruse to rescue six Americans from Tehran in 1979, among a host of other things.
