OPINION / Royal Canadian Mounted Police use EADS P25 radio system to provide G8 Security

By Paul Martin

In June 2010, the town of Huntsville, Ontario, Canada will host the G8 Summit. Leaders from around the globe will gather for three days to advance their interests, advocate for open markets and free trade, and champion freedom, democracy and human rights.

The G8 summit is an international event which is followed by many around the globe, but in past years has often attracted protesters and violence. To ensure the safety of international attendees, visitors and onlookers, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has awarded a contract for a new P25 radio system for the “O” Division to EADS Defence and Security to provide critical communications in the province of Ontario, Canada.

The contract includes the roll-out of a state-of-the-art, open standard P25 IP-based digital public safety radio communications network and command and control centers that will expand across Ontario as the new central region operation communication system. The P25 digital communication network will also be used as the primary means to provide secure wireless communications during the upcoming G8 Summit, which is slated to commence on June 25.

The roll-out envisions a multi-step approach with a number of phases. Phase 1 will be implemented in time for exclusive use to secure the G8 Summit and will be spread out across a 360-kilometer corridor in Ontario. The second and larger phase will extend the network to cover the entire province, and will replace the existing central region operation communication system.

EADS Defence & Security (DS) is a provider of mission-critical communication and command & control solutions through its line of business security and communication solutions and operational business units of PlantCML in the U.S. and Canada. DS provides solutions for armed forces and civil security organizations worldwide. The company’s portfolio includes sensors, secure networks, missiles, aircraft and UAVs, as well as global security, service and support solutions.

"We are pleased to have been awarded this contract for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police," said Steve Shanck, general manager for P25 radio network solutions. "Unlike other applications, the RCMP will not operate both trunking and conventional networks, but will fast-track the new P25 system across the province.”

As an IP-based, open-standard (Project P25) digital trunked solution, CORP25 allows P25 and non-P25 radios to operate together on one core architecture, providing operators full autonomy and control over the radio network.

“This contract is a concrete illustration of EADS's commitment to expanding our operations in Canada,” Pierre Delestrade, CEO, EADS Canada, said. “EADS has made a strong commitment to Canada and increasing the P25 market here as evidenced by our investment in the Gatineau, Quebec centre of excellence."

At the end of June, as Canada welcomes the world’s leaders to the G8 Summit, visitors, tourists and even protesters from around the globe can rest assured that their safety is being safeguarded by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and its new P25 radio system from EADS Defence and Security.
