Drone maker says UAVs set to take over at border patrols, criminal hot spots

CAPE TOWN July 7, 2017 Autonomous drones are set to take over border patrols, crime hotspot monitoring and more, says South Africa'sAirborne Drones.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)s, commonly known as drones, will soon be a common sight over border zones, crime hotspots and city streets, as public safety and security officials and police departments discover the cost saving and efficiencies offered by drone patrol 'armies', says Airborne Drones, a South African-based international manufacturer of enterprise-grade drones.

"Drones provide the ideal solution to the problems and limitations faced by other surveillance methods such as GPS tracking, CCTV camera observation, biometric surveillance and ground patrols," says Airborne Drones South Africa. "Aerial surveillance is increasingly being harnessed for security monitoring; but traditionally, this has been carried out using helicopters - which are costly to deploy - and with drones controlled by a user - which can be somewhat limited in terms of operating hours. However, drone surveillance does present an easier, faster, and cheaper method of data collection, as well as a number of other key advantages. Specialised security drones can enter narrow and confined spaces, produce minimal noise, and can be equipped with night vision cameras and thermal sensors, allowing them to provide imagery that the human eye is unable to detect. In addition, these UAVs can quickly cover large and difficult-to-reach areas, reducing staff numbers and costs, and do not require much space for their operators."

"Autonomous, long-range security drones are at the vanguard of new policing methods", says Airborne Drones South Africa. "Offering live video feeds to ground control stations, these drones can range autonomously over pre-programmed flight paths for extended periods of time, allowing for ongoing routine patrols across wide areas such as borders, maritime regions and high security installations. Should an incident be detected, ground crews can then follow objects or intruders from a safe distance, providing visual support to safety and security teams. UAVs can provide detailed visual documentation of sites, enabling effective analysis, risk management and security planning."

"Numerous countries are already rolling out security drones to support their public safety and defence initiatives", says Airborne Drones. UAVs are also instrumental in managing transport infrastructure safety and security and event security, from event security infrastructure through to spectator and crowd control and safety, to overall health and safety planning around the world.

Israel has long harnessed advanced drones for military surveillance, and recently sold a fleet of so-called 'spy drones' to the Irish army; the US FBI has also used drones for surveillance and tracking for several years. In Australia, a new $50 million Defence Cooperative Research Centre will develop long-range drones, automated vehicles and robots to help Australian soldiers fight the wars of the future. India is currently looking to military-grade UAVs for maritime and other surveillance and intelligence gathering, Brazil's São Paulo last month became the first Latin American city to use drones for public security surveillance, and the German city of Hamburg this week said it would deploy surveillance drones as part of its arsenal against an expected 100,000 demonstrators at the G20 summit this weekend.

In Australia's New South Wales, the authorities are even using helicopter and drone surveillance along the coast to protect holiday makers from rip currents and sharks.

"Drones are ideally suited for reconnaissance or rapid situation awareness with application for ground force units to detect and monitor potential threats; and they also provide an additional oversight in instances where security guards are deployed to ensure their adherence to patrolling routines. Their speed, size, maneuverability and additional technologies make UAVs the perfect supplement to ground security teams seeking to perform monitoring tasks more quickly and efficiently. Drones have a competitive edge over stationary cameras, as intruders can't easily step out of sight, and they can cover areas that are normally out of reach. Security drones add a whole new dimension to surveillance, safety and security, and as such, we can expect them to be commonly in use in every country in the world within just a few years," says Airborne Drones.

Tennessee company wins $33.6M contract to develop Houston's intelligent transportation system

NASHVILLE July 06, 2017 The City of Houston has awarded TransCore a $33.6 million contract to design and build an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) that will be deployed across 489 intersections throughout the city.  The new system will be fully integrated with the City’s multi-agency partnership, Houston TranStar, and the City’s traffic management center, enabling traffic engineers and emergency operators to immediately detect, respond to, and share real-time information with the traveling public.  The project is expected to be completed in early 2020.

Over the next three years, TransCore will design and install:

  • 91 new Dynamic Message Signs
  • 113 roadside cameras
  • 144 solar-powered, mid-block radar detection sites
  • 489 traffic signal detection sites

“Our population is expected to grow by 50 percent over the next 20 years.  This equates to another two million travelers on our local roads,” said Alanna Reed, Public Information Officer for the Department of Public Works and Engineering, City of Houston.  “This smart technology infrastructure will enable us to prepare for this growth and provide the residents of Houston greater mobility across the region.”

The ITS system will continuously monitor some of Houston’s busiest streets.  Through real-time data collection and monitoring from roadside equipment, traffic engineers can stay abreast of current traffic conditions and even predict those locations and times that have a greater likelihood of incidents.  The system will immediately dispatch emergency personnel when needed, as well as alert motorists of changing roadway conditions by automatically posting updates on dynamic message signs.

“As major metropolitan cities continue to grow, the use of intelligent transportation systems has enabled local governments to increase mobility, lower environmental impacts of congestion, and make our roadways safer,” said Clint Holley, Houston-based vice president and southwest managing director, TransCore.  “We are excited to work with the City of Houston to deploy a state-of-the-art, city-wide ITS system that brings these important innovations to all of us,” he said.

Throughout the U.S. and internationally, TransCore has deployed innovative intelligent traffic management solutions, including the world’s largest traffic control system in New York City.  For over 30 years, TransCore has partnered with agencies throughout the state of Texas to implement ground-breaking transportation initiatives.  In Houston, TransCore developed the country’s first wrong-way detection system, and in 2015, TransCore completed another milestone project, the largest reversible High-Occupancy Vehicle to High Occupancy Toll lane conversion.

Electro-Optical Industries markets 360-degree thermal cameras for maritime threats

BOSTON June 28, 2017 Piracy had been on a steep decline since 2010 due to increased security efforts and precautions taken aboard ships. However, in the past few years, per the OBP report, there has been decreased vigilance by the shipping community such as hiring smaller private security teams and taking less security measures aboard ships. In 2017, only halfway through the year, there have already been two hijackings including a tanker and a commercial ship. Read the full report from OBP here: http://oceansbeyondpiracy.org/reports/sop

A solution to the rise in piracy is not just to increase the number of security personnel aboard ships, but to also outfit the ship with surveillance technology which will allow them to take the precautions necessary to avoid a conflict. Electro Optical Industries’ line of 360-degree panoramic view infrared thermal cameras, Spynel, are able to detect and track targets that could present a threat to a ship and its crew. They act as optical radars but can pick up targets that radar could not detect, such as small wooden and rigid inflatable boats up to the horizon. The Spynel cameras can successfully operate at sea state level 5/6 (rough to very rough sea) thanks to an autonomous gyro-stabilized platform and in addition to mechanical stabilization, Spynels come with a sea-specific image processing stabilization algorithm. Spynel are currently deployed on ships and at ports around the world to combat against theft, piracy, terrorism and espionage.

An optional software module enables the display AIS (Automatic Identification System) data from boats in the thermal panoramic video. The automatic thermal detections and the AIS data can be fused to generate alarms only for instance objects without AIS transmitter, like a pirate. (Requires an AIS receiver)

About the Company: Electro-Optical Industries is a world leader in electro optics and infrared test equipment, thermographic cameras for process control monitoring and infrared wide area surveillance systems. Founded in 1964, Electro-Optical Industries has products in over 80 different countries with a customer list of over 10,000, including some of the best-known companies worldwide.

To participate in Toshiba's ExacqVision Trade-in Program, customers should visit www.toshibasecurity.com/tradein for additional details. ExacqVision hardware will be recycled responsibly via zero landfill and recycling methods appropriate to material type.

"Our Percept cloud-empowered NVRs really provide our reseller partners with a way to bolster their recurring revenue around surveillance and differentiate themselves in the market. Leveraging our Surveillix Web Services, they unlock the simplest, most powerful IP video surveillance management solution available today," said Greg Hartzell, Director of Toshiba Surveillance & IP Video Products Group. "Our new trade-in program allows us to introduce ExacqVision customers to the Percept experience and help them streamline their operations, improve their network security, and reduce their software licensing costs, among other benefits."

TRADE-UP TO A BETTER VMS EXPERIENCE

Hartzell notes that while ExacqVision has historically been a leading video management system, it requires significant configuration and maintenance when deployed across a large number of locations. Surveillix Web Services simplifies the experience by migrating management of user permissions and recorder access to the cloud, enabling the managing of hundreds or thousands of users and sites from one secure, central location.

Also, the Surveillix Web Services infrastructure eliminates the need for port forwarding and enables remote access without opening inbound ports on a firewall to maintain a hardened network and save configuration time.

Finally, while ExacqVision Start is a cost effective offering, users must pay for Professional or Enterprise licensing to access the features required to manage video across a multi-site enterprise. Users must have an Enterprise license and a current SMA for access to the Exacq health monitoring service. Surveillix Web Services save users money by delivering three cost effective versions priced per channel. All software versions are compatible with the full suite of innovative Surveillix Web Service solutions including health monitoring.

Two Mississippi law enforcement agencies pick BodyWorn for video and communications solutions

DECATUR, GA June 29, 2017 Utility, Inc. announced today that the Harrison County Sheriff's Department and Pascagoula Police Department in Mississippi have selected BodyWorn™ police cameras and Rocket IoT™ in-car video recording and communications systems. These departments join the Biloxi Police Department, Gulfport Police Department, Long Beach Police Department, Hancock County Sheriff's Office and Clinton Police Department in deploying smart BodyWorn cameras and Rocket IoT systems

The BodyWorn software is a complete situational awareness system with real-time mapping and communication with field assets; which includes Officers and their vehicles.  "The adoption of BodyWorn in Mississippi marks a recurring trend we are starting to see in other regions around the Country.  It tells us that these Agencies see our interconnected system as more than just a camera, they see it as a tool for managing field assets," says Ted Davis, CEO of Utility.  "We're honored that the market is seeing us leading the situational awareness discussion, because we knew when we designed our system it was not something traditional body cameras could provide.  For these Mississippi Agencies to move to a smarter, more advanced system over the traditional magnet mount and clip-on push-button cameras without real-time situational awareness tells us how much Mississippi values the safety of their Officers and the communities they serve."

Recent orders received from the following departments in Mississippi:

  • Harrison County Sheriff's Department - 73 BodyWorn Cameras and 73 Rocket IoT Systems
  • Pascagoula Police Department - 45 BodyWorn Cameras and 35 Rocket IoT Systems

"We are thrilled to join other Mississippi public safety departments in deploying Utility's BodyWorn camera technology," said Sheriff Troy Peterson, Harrison County Sheriff's Department. "This type of regional cooperation among law enforcement agencies is the right step forward to promoting positive policing through officer safety and community trust."

Pascagoula Police Chief Kenny Johnson highlighted some of the reasons why his department selected BodyWorn. "We have researched and tested body camera systems for a long time to find the best technology for our agency and community. The ability to have the body worn camera turn on automatically in key situations and communicate with other officers and supervisors gives us a great tool to serve the public."

Both the BodyWorn camera and the Rocket IoT, singularly or in conjunction, utilize their unique communication capabilities to activate specific recording triggers that automatically initiate video recording. These triggers are set by the Department's individual recording policies—including a built-in accelerometer, prone positioning, light bar sensors in concert with door opening, rapid motion, GeoFence entry, etc.— and can be updated at any time via their video management system, AVaiL Web™. The BodyWorn camera and the Rocket IoT system offer unique integration with real-time GPS reporting of officer and vehicle, auto-related video for synchronized video playback, dockless evidence offload and more.

Jackson, Mississippi-based PILEUM, an authorized reseller of BodyWorn™ and Utility's IT consultant and systems integration partner, will work alongside Utility to help in deploying the technology.

About Utility

Utility, Inc. provides law enforcement officers with an intuitive platform for effectively capturing, managing and releasing video evidence. Utility's BodyWorn™ camera and Rocket IoT™ in-car video system incorporates real-time communications, policy-based automatic recording functionality, and real-time GPS positioning for the best situational awareness possible during critical times. “As CMOs increasingly assume responsibility for driving not just brand but business growth, they have an unprecedented opportunity to affect revenue and customer experience,” the report says.

IC Realtime surveillance cameras now integrate with Amazon Echo Show

POMPANO BEACH, FL  June 22, 2017 IC Realtime announced today a surveillance camera integration with Amazon Echo Show. The result of a significant development project wherein IC Realtime’s R&D team worked with Amazon’s camera Application Programming Interface (API), more than 100 existing IC Realtime surveillance cameras have the added ability to stream live video to Echo Show.
IC Realtime offers a wide array of video surveillance cameras and recorders. The brand is well-recognized within the professional security channels for its products’ performance attributes and ability to natively integrate with complex home automation systems. The company’s products are sold and installed worldwide by security systems and audio-video integration specialists.

IC Realtime models compatible with Echo Show include the brand’s suite of ‘ICIP’ series IP cameras (68 models in total) as well as dozens of its Standard- and High-Definition cameras that work in conjunction with an IC Realtime digital video recorder.

According to IC Realtime Technical Manager of Software Integration Chris Callaway, because the Amazon Alexa architecture is primarily Internet-connected, a requirement of the Amazon integration is that connectivity of cameras must take place through a back-end cloud service.
For several years IC Realtime has offered subscribers a cloud storage service called ICMyCloud, which grants users in home and business settings the ability to stream and record high-definition video footage from their IC Realtime cameras as often as 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.  IC Realtime’s Echo Show compatible cameras connect through ICMyCloud.

Locations in the home where security cameras are commonly placed include nursery rooms, entertainment and living rooms, front/side/back doors, garages, pool areas and more.

The ICMyCloud camera works with Echo Show the following way: “The Alexa ‘skill' pulls the ‘Camera Name’ you’ve assigned within ICMyCloud,” says Callaway. “Let’s say for example you have named a camera for the Nursery.  You simply say, ‘Alexa, Show the Nursery camera.’ Alexa would respond with ‘OK, showing Nursery camera’ and begin its stream. When you are finished, you would simply instruct Alexa to ‘Hide my Camera.’”
Callaway also notes that keeping the video data safe is of the highest-priority. “IC Realtime implements stringent security protocols for the cloud- and internet-connected camera integrations, ensuring support of strong encryption methods, password complexity, and unique session URLs to guarantee the strongest integrity possible,” says Callaway.

“The ability to share video from our security cameras via the Cloud to Echo Show is a prime example of today’s ‘Smart Home’ graduating to an ‘Internet of Things Smart Home,’” says IC Realtime CEO Matt Sailor. “IC Realtime and its parent company IC Real Tech continue to bring to market innovative ways for people to capture and interact with their video surveillance - from crime/forensics to 360-degree lifestyle video.”

Expanding upon the popular Alexa devices such as the Echo and Echo Dot, Echo Show adds a 7-inch touchscreen, dual Dolby optimized speakers, video-calling and a front-facing camera.

IC Realtime is the leading IP video surveillance camera brand in the custom residential channel. The company makes a vast array of security cameras and video recorders. Notable achievements include the company’s pioneering of the Cloud Video Recorder™ and the IC Real Tech ALLie Home 360-degree x 360-degree Lifestyle camera.
