Edmonton Fire Rescue deploys Opticom emergency vehicle pre-emption technology to 58 intersections

St. Paul, Minnesota, May 24, 2017 - Global Traffic Technologies Canada, Inc. (GTT) has contracted with Edmonton Fire Rescue Service in Alberta, Canada for the implementation of the GPS-based Opticom™ traffic preemption solution. The Opticom system works alongside intersection controllers to help ensure emergency vehicles can move through intersections rapidly and safely.

When an emergency vehicle needs to navigate an intersection, the Opticom Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) system on-board the emergency vehicle sends a request to the intersection’s controller ahead of its arrival, turning the light green and clearing a path to enable the vehicle’s safe – and faster – passage. In Edmonton, the EVP system has been deployed to 58 of the city’s busiest intersections.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Service provides frontline fire rescue services, fire prevention programs, and public education to make the city a safer and healthier place. Its history goes back to 1891, when it began as a volunteer fire corps. Today, the Fire Rescue Service operates 29 stations throughout the city. Edmonton is the capital of Alberta, and is the province’s second-largest city and the fifth largest municipality in Canada, with close to a million residents.

FBI intelligence analysts send letter to Trump with recommendations for bureau's next leader

WASHINGTON May 18, 2017 The FBI Intelligence Analysts Association — which seeks to elevate the importance of the FBI’s intelligence mission and to represent the professional interests of the FBI’s 3,100 plus Intelligence Analysts (IAs) — recently requested the President, members of the Senate and House of Representatives, and the Attorney General to consider the association’s views on the critical matter of selecting the next Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

In its letter to senior government officials, the FBI IAA articulated the need for the selection of a nonpartisan Director who will maintain the FBI’s traditional neutrality and independence. The FBI IAA believes it is vital that the next Director come without attachment to, or a background as, a partisan elected official in a political party. Additionally, the FBI IAA listed three necessary traits for a successor to manage the FBI in the 21st century, specifically that the next Director:

Has Deep Understanding of and Commitment to the FBI’s Dual Intelligence and Law Enforcement Mission;

Has the Ability to Strengthen a Culture of Collaboration within the FBI and Across the Law Enforcement and Intelligence Communities; and

Is Innovative, Adaptable, and Forward-Leaning to Effectively Target the Nation’s Criminal and National Security Threats

The FBI IAA emphasized that it is vital for the next Director continue to build the FBI’s Intelligence Career Service (ICS), with intelligence leadership, and be committed to strengthening a culture of collaboration, which engages the diverse talents of the entire FBI workforce. The next Director must also quickly adapt the FBI’s priorities and develop new ways of doing business, including technology advancements, in the face of an ever-changing set of diverse and sophisticated threats.

While the association chose not to endorse a specific candidate as the ideal successor, the FBI IAA will welcome a Director who will be as strong of an advocate for the FBI’s intelligence mission as former Director Comey.

French law enforcement organization receive vehicles armored by Centigon

It is also equipped with a complete set of safety systems, including a large flap of the roof, run flat ensuring vehicle mobility even with a punctured tire, the ballistic glass is made of multi-layered glass and polycarbonate.

Designed on a standard Toyota Land Cruiser chassis rigorously selected for its performance, robustness, reliability and a global support network, the vehicle is available as a petrol (5.7L, 4.6L) or diesel engine (4.5L).

Colonel Laurent Phélip underlined, "The importance of such a tool in the fight against terrorism and more particularly in the current context. The Fortress Intervention has already been presented at several events including the SOFINS Special Forces 2017, where it drew the interest of many foreign visitors and delegations. AmeriCorps agency honored for work during disaster response efforts

WASHINGTON May 17, 2017 The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that oversees AmeriCorps and Senior Corps, was selected as the National VOAD Partner of the Year. The award, presented by National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD), recognizes the contributions CNCS programs have had in disaster response and recovery efforts throughout the country during the last year. 

NVOAD is a national coordinating body for the major community and faith-based organizations involved in disaster response. The award was presented by National VOAD CEO, Greg Forrester, at the organization's annual conference in Houston on Tuesday evening.

In 2016, CNCS deployed more than 1,300 AmeriCorps members from AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams to seven nationally-declared disasters. AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams are CNCS's elite specialty-trained crews deployed at the request of local and federal emergency managers. The teams deployed in 2016 represented the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.

AmeriCorps members joined response efforts for the Missouri, West Virginia, Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana flooding; the Flint water crisis; Hurricane Matthew; and the East Tennessee wildfires. Their efforts led to the mucking and gutting of more than 1,400 homes. Mucking and gutting is essential to returning families and individuals back to their homes. Without these services, houses quickly become unsalvageable, contributing to the devastating loss of available, affordable housing in communities most in need. Other services include debris removal, roof tarping, sandbagging, volunteer and donations management, and the establishment of long-term recovery coalitions, which bring together local organizations to provide critical recovery resources to homeowners.

"CNCS's work in disaster response and recovery cannot be done alone. The AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members deployed become part of the communities in which they serve and stand shoulder to shoulder with their neighbors throughout the recovery process," said Kelly DeGraff, senior advisor for disaster services at the Corporation for National and Community Service. "CNCS is honored to receive this award, and proud to share it with the thousands of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members who've responded to disasters and all the lives they've touched."

Additional 2017 NVOAD winners include the South Dakota VOAD for the Innovative Program of the Year, the North Carolina VOAD for State VOAD of the Year, All Hands for Member of the Year, Christy Smith of UMCOR for the Spirit Award, and Dee Binder of the American Red Cross for the Don Hampton Volunteer of the Year Award. 

Currently, more than 80 AmeriCorps members in Missouri and Texas are assisting local communities in their response to devastating storms and flooding. In Texas, AmeriCorps members from the Texas Conservation Corps have set up a Volunteer Reception Center and are joined by Senior Corps members from the RV Disaster Corps. In Missouri, AmeriCorps St. Louis members are joined by five AmeriCorps NCCC teams to support the 2-1-1 call center, muck-and-gut operations, debris removal, and volunteer management.

Following a disaster, national service acts as a force multiplier, providing key resources and significantly expanding the capacity of existing organizations on the ground. More than 40,000 AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members were deployed in response to Hurricane Katrina. In the decade since, AmeriCorps teams have provided critical support after countless disasters, including the Flint water crisis; 2016 Louisiana flood; 2014 Southeast Michigan flood; Hurricane Sandy; tornadoes in Joplin, Mo., Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Moore, Okla.; the explosion in West, Texas; and the Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill.

Leidos wins $45M contract to remove HAZMAT materials from TSA checkpoints

RESTON, VA May 15, 2017 Leidos (NYSE: LDOS), a global science and technology company, was awarded a prime contract by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to continue to provide hazardous materials management and disposal services at more than 440 airport screening checkpoints. The single-award, firm fixed-price contract has a one-year base period of performance, four one-year options, and a total contract value of $45 million if all options are exercised. Work will be performed at all TSA continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, South Pacific and U.S. Virgin Islands screening checkpoints in federalized airport locations.

Under the contract, Leidos will provide regulatory support to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local hazardous materials and hazardous waste regulations; treatment, storage, and disposal facility due diligence audits; management and operation of the Leidos-developed online documentation and recordkeeping system, HazOUT®; emergency and spill response support; and development and execution of training programs.

FEMA opens 30-day comment period on draft National Incident Management System documents

May 15, 2017 Today, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released five documents designed to strengthen the Resource Management component of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and is now beginning a 30-day National Engagement period. The National Engagement period will conclude at 5 pm EDT on June 9, 2017.

NIMS provides a consistent and common approach and vocabulary to enable the whole community to work together seamlessly to manage all threats and hazards, regardless of cause, size, location, or complexity.

The drafts released today include the NIMS Guideline for the National Qualification System (NQS), NIMS Job Titles/Position Qualifications and accompanying Position Task Books (PTBs), the NIMS Guideline for Mutual Aid, and an updated NIMS Guideline for the Credentialing of Personnel. Together, these documents are designed to enhance interoperability and the effectiveness of mutual aid.

  • NIMS Guideline for the NQS provides a common language and approach for qualifying and certifying deployable emergency personnel, enabling enables mutual aid partners to accurately communicate resource needs in disasters.
  • NIMS Job Titles/Position Qualifications define minimum qualifications criteria for personnel serving in defined deployable incident positions.
  • NIMS Position Task Books (PTBs) identify the competencies, behaviors, and tasks that personnel should demonstrate to become qualified for a defined incident position.
  • The NIMS Guideline for Mutual Aid is designed to help unify mutual aid efforts by providing stakeholders with common practice and processes for use in mutual aid planning.
  • The updated NIMS Guideline for the Credentialing of Personnel provide national standards and guidance for credentialing incident personnel.

FEMA is hosting a series of 60-minute engagement webinars to describe the draft documents and answer participants’ questions about providing feedback. All open webinars are geared toward the whole community.

Kentucky county 911 center implements Total Response computer-aided solution

MADISON, CT May 11, 2017 Oldham County Central Dispatch (Kentucky) is enhancing their 911 call-handling capabilities with PowerPhone's Total Response solution. The latest improvements come from implementing Total Response CACH (Computer Aided Call Handling), a proven software solution that streamlines the 911 call-handling process by providing integrated response protocols and pre-arrival instructions that help guide dispatchers through each call.

Every staff member is now currently certified in all three dispatch disciplines: Emergency Medical Dispatch, Law Enforcement Dispatch and Fire Service Dispatch.
