Vehicle barrier system control protects entry and collects system data

St. Michael, MN, March 15, 2016 – CINCH systems, Inc. is pleased to announce a U.S. Patent* award for the Rampart VBS (Vehicle Barrier System) controls with data collection functionality.

The Rampart VBS is a high-security control and data (event) logging system for precise vehicle barrier/bollard and door/security gate management. The Rampart VBS utilizes patented End-To-End AES Encryption for secure system communication with a memory capacity to log and store 233 million entry/exit events—delivering reliable, split-second barrier activation with forensic data.

“Vehicle barriers and bollards are used to control vehicle access to the perimeter of a high profile facility. When a barrier/bollard is deployed to prevent entry or exit, it will stop and render a suspect vehicle completely inoperable. The Rampart VBS control system is designed to fit the demand for high security in both retrofit and new installations,” says Joel Christianson, CEO, CINCH systems, Inc. “The Rampart VBS is a microprocessor control with distinct advantages over PLC controls, including: better input and output protection for longer life, reduced labor costs, lower equipment costs and easy system upgrades with no custom programming necessary. Rampart records and stores up to 233 million events [actions and movements], something PLC controls do not offer,”adds Christianson.

Raytheon to offer new long-range missile for U.S. Army fires requirement

Huntsville, AL, March 16 - Raytheon Company will offer a new missile design to meet the U.S. Army's Long-Range Precision Fires (LRPF) requirement to replace current army tactical missile system weapons.

"Our LRPF design will provide the U.S. Army with double the combat power of its ground launchers by utilizing a new design that fits two missiles in a single launcher pod -- increasing effectiveness at a fraction of the cost of the current weapon," said Dr. Thomas Bussing, Raytheon vice president of Advanced Missile Systems. "Advances in propulsion will enable LRPF to fly faster over longer distances -- approximately 500 kilometers -- to defeat fixed land targets. This is the definition of overmatch against future threats."

Navtech eCharts EFB

New York, NY, March 10 – VSS, a private investment firm focused on the information, tech-enabled business services, healthcare IT, and education industries, today announced that VSS Structured Capital II has completed the sale of its interest in Navtech Inc., a global leader in flight operations software for the commercial aviation industry.  The business was acquired by Airbus ProSky SAS, part of the Airbus group of companies.

Headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, with offices in London and Cardiff, Navtech serves more than 400 aircraft operators and aviation services customers worldwide, with a suite of high-quality, mission-critical aeronautical products and services including aeronautical charts, navigation data solutions, flight planning, aircraft performance and crew planning solutions.  In 2015, VSS assisted Navtech with the acquisition of DW International Ltd., a U.K.-based developer of satellite flight solutions focusing on RAIM prediction technology.

VSS made a minority investment in Navtech in June 2013 to refinance a mezzanine loan and buy out some equity holders through VSS Structured Capital II, a $312 million fund raised in 2009.  VSS originated the investment on a proprietary basis, partnering with majority owner Cambridge Information Group, a family investment firm run by CEO Andy Snyder that makes private investments in the education and professional information markets.

“VSS allowed us to accelerate the development of our SaaS and Electronic Flight Bag products.  They were supportive of the company's growth initiatives and helped us think through the most efficient capital structure at each step,” said Snyder.

“Navtech is representative of our strong experience providing flexible debt and equity solutions to lower middle market businesses in the information industry,” said David Bainbridge, a Managing Director at VSS who served on the company’s Board of Directors. “We are pleased to have been a value added strategic partner to Navtech and its shareholders.”

Other past VSS structured capital investments that the firm has successfully exited in the last year include the sale of Trover Solutions to New Mountain Capital, the sale of Cast & Crew Entertainment Services to Silver Lake, and the sale of Strata Decision Technology to Roper Technologies. VSS has a long history of partnering with entrepreneurs and providing structured capital for expansions, acquisition financings, product launches, recapitalizations and management buyouts or buy-ins.

Qognify's market leading PSIM and Situation Management Solution adds actionable intelligence capabilities

Paramus, NJ, February 29 - Qognify, formerly NICE Security, today announced the release of Situator 8.0 with the introduction of the new Operational Intelligence Center (OIC). The latest version of the market leading PSIM and Situation Management solution provides a platform for leveraging the massive amounts of big data Situator captures, monitors and correlates and turns it into actionable intelligence.

The Operational Intelligence Center, with its new advanced rules engine, monitors large volumes of data and detects deviations in leading indicators, which are often precursors to incidents. This allows organizations to prepare for impending incidents, initiate a proactive response and mitigate their impact. Additionally, the OIC introduces a new visualization engine, which greatly enhances Situational Awareness and ongoing operations management. Displaying any operational parameter, the visualization engine allows supervisors, executives and other stakeholders to customize dashboards based on their needs and their role, providing the right information to the right people in real time.

Situator's OIC goes beyond just presenting business intelligence. Its powerful correlation engine and adaptive workflow capabilities provide actionable intelligence: insight about what is happening or unfolding, together with the critical 'what to do next' guidance. This can be incredibly valuable, particularly when the cost of business disruption is measured in minutes by organizations such as airports, mass transit, critical facilities and even commercial entities such as banks. In the same way that the OIC proactively addresses unfolding incidents, it can also be used by an organization to improve performance of day-to-day operational activities.

"Our customers and partners were actively involved in the design and development of the Operational Intelligence Center," said Moti Shabtai, President of Qognify. "They wanted a solution that would help them anticipate unfolding events and effectively manage them, in order to mitigate any impact. Additionally, they wanted to get a holistic view of what is happening in their organization on a day-to-day basis. Organizations can now align KPIs with their business objectives, allowing them to understand what needs to be changed or improved and how. They can then monitor results to gauge the efficacy of their actions, making adjustments for continual improvement along the way."

Situator 8.0 is available now from Qognify.

Upstream oil and gas companies spend smarter on digital technologies to drive value, reduce costs in downturn, Accenture and Microsoft survey finds

Houston, TX, March 9 - As upstream oil and gas companies scrutinize every dollar invested, they’re spending smarter today on digital technologies, seeking to drive value and reduce costs amid low oil and gas prices, a new survey by Accenture (NYSE: ACN) and Microsoft Corp. reports. Respondents to the ”2016 Upstream Oil and Gas Digital Trends Survey” included international oil companies (IOCs), national oil companies (NOCs), independents and oilfield services firms.

Over the next three to five years, 80 percent of upstream oil and gas companies plan to spend the same, more, or significantly more (30%, 36%, and 14%, respectively) on digital technologies as they do now, according to the survey, now in its fifth edition. This continued investment in digital is due to respondents’ confidence that digital technologies can continue to help them drive leaner, smarter organizations.

More than half (53 percent) of respondents said digital is already adding high to significant value to their businesses. Cost reduction was identified as the biggest challenge that digital technologies can most address today, respondents said. In addition, respondents reported that making faster and better decisions was the greatest benefit digital technologies can deliver (56 percent) and that one of the biggest barriers to realizing value is the lack of a clear strategy or business case, not the technology itself.

Today’s digital investments focus more on mobility, with almost three-fifths of respondents (57 percent) reporting having invested in mobile, compared to 49 percent of the respondents in last year’s survey. Next is investing in the Internet of Things (IoT) (44 percent) this year vs. 25 percent in 2015 and the cloud (38 percent), up 8 percent from last year. Over the next three to five years, these investments are expected to shift more to big data and analytics (38 percent), IoT (36 percent) and mobile (31 percent).

“In the current challenging environment, the upstream oil and gas industry is focusing digital technologies on areas that help them work smarter and deliver significant efficiencies and savings in the short term while enabling them to make better decisions faster,” said Rich Holsman, global head of Digital in Accenture’s Energy industry group. “So, in the short term we expect these companies will continue to invest in areas that help lower operations costs through technologies like increased worker productivity with mobility, lower infrastructure costs through the cloud and drive better asset management through analytics.”

Respondents said digital’s biggest impact to date on the upstream oil and gas workforce has been increased employee productivity and engagement followed by better training and reskilling opportunities. They see the greatest impact from IoT in enabling connected field workers, with 60 percent of respondents planning to have field workers and assets digitally connected with smart devices.

The use of the cloud, respondents said, has shifted from being used primarily for infrastructure to an enabler of mobile tools. This trend is expected to increase in the next three to five years, as companies keep using the cloud to get faster and more value from other digital technologies.

“By taking advantage of the intelligent cloud, greater use of analytics and IoT go hand in hand with what we are seeing in our business today – the advent of the industrial Internet enabling the power of digital across the oil and gas landscape,” said Craig Hodges, general manager of the Gulf Coast District at Microsoft. “You can see this trend gaining traction from connected wells and intelligent pipelines to highly- efficient digital refineries.”

While two thirds (66 percent) identified analytics as one of the most important capabilities for transforming their company, only 13 percent felt their firm’s analytical capabilities were mature. Almost two-thirds (65 percent) plan to implement more analytic capabilities in the next three years to help address this need.

The “2016 Upstream Oil and Gas Digital and Technology Trends Survey,” sponsored by Accenture and Microsoft and conducted by PennEnergy Research in partnership with the Oil & Gas Journal, surveyed upstream professionals worldwide, including engineers, geologists and mid-level and executive management.
