Far too often, the concept of “homeland security” is understood through a filter designed to capture only the meaning imparted to it by 9/11. That is, “homeland security” is looked upon as a way to secure the homeland from terrorist attacks.

President Obama should be commended for making nuclear nonproliferation a priority of his administration. At the 2010 Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, DC, in April, the president was right to urge global cooperation on isolating non-secure nuclear materials that could be used to make a weapon.

Mr. Speaker, U.S. Border Patrol agents have spotted yet another Mexican military helicopter incursion into Texas. That makes three times these helicopters have crossed the border into America this year, that we know of. On Saturday [May 15, 2010], another Mexican military helicopter was in Texas, hovering near the Roma-Miguel Aleman International Bridge. Two other times this year, Mexican helicopters were photographed in Starr and Zapata Counties in Texas.

While strolling up and down the aisles at the ASIS New York City Chapter’s security expo at the Javits Center on April 30, I tried to take a quick reading on the current state of the government security marketplace, but frankly the views of half a dozen exhibitors were all over the map.

I wondered whether the economy-wide recession during the past two years was depressing government procurements, or whether the Obama administration’s pump-priming stimulus program had led to an increase in such government purchases.

   Once again, there's a new push for an amnesty bill to pass this Congress. Yesterday, tens of thousands of people marched in Washington, D.C., wanting amnesty. And it was interesting. As I looked over this very peaceful crowd and all those people marching, I wondered why there were no American flags.

The Kingdom of Jordan has successfully deployed Intergraph public safety and security incident management software as part of a comprehensive, nationwide homeland security initiative to prevent and respond to local and regional terrorism threats.

In mid-2009, a fiber optic fence sensor system was installed on McAllen-Miller International Airport’s perimeter fence. The system, known as Secure Fence, was developed by Future Fibre Technologies and, one year later, the airport’s security department reports that the system has performed impressively.

According to Donald “Buck” Taft, Airport Security Coordinator at McAllen-Miller International Airport, the system was installed in response to security concerns over the number of commercial flights and the airport’s proximity to Mexico.

Pictometry International Corp., announced on August 24 the appointment of Kevin Reilley as President of Pictometry Business Solutions (PBS), a role in which Reilley will he expected to drive sales and product development across multiple business segments.

“We are delighted to have Kevin join us,” said Richard Hurwitz, Pictometry’s chief executive officer. “Under his direction and support, we expect to provide the same clear and compelling solutions to businesses that Pictometry has been offering to government enterprises.”

MCS Fire & Security, a service and solutions provider in the commercial security and fire detection industry, has announced that DHS has awarded it SAFETY Act Certification and Designation coverage for its electronic security installation and integration services. 

Senstar Corp. has announced the appointment of Gord Loney as Vice‐President of Product Sales. This new position has been created in order to drive the company’s product sales globally as it implements a strategy to rationalize its entire product line, develop new technologies and introduce new products. 

Identifying visitors to a school, hospital or a corporate facility can be overwhelming; never mind all of the products to choose from. Recognizing this, Visitor Pass Solutions by Data Management, Inc., of Farmington, CT, has created a new, user-friendly one-stop shopping catalog. 

The Federal Aviation Administration has decided to award a sole source contract to L-3 Communications Cincinnati Electronics Corp., of Mason, OH, to supply infra-red and electro-optical cameras for the FAA’s Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center, based in Oklahoma City, OK. 

The Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (MMAC) provides service and support to the U.S. Department of Transportation in general, and training, logistics, research, and data services for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). 

Raytheon Company has received a contract from the city of Providence, RI, to strengthen surveillance in its port by integrating chemical-detection sensors into the existing security system.

Ian Ehrenberg, VP and General Manager, indicates that Xtralis has a 25-year history of providing advanced detection technologies for intrusion detection, perimeter protection and CCTV. Applications include the Department of State and Consulates around the world, plus the Vancouver Olympics, where Xtralis provided the primary infrared protection device. Government markets include military and civilian buyers and the DoD, which use the OnGuard system, whose 2010 integrated access control, ID management and video surveillance system offers enhanced video surveillance.

Andy Teich, President of FLIR’s Commercial Systems Division, describes two new products. The FLIR Thermal Fence ties FLIR cameras together into a network that includes a network console and an analytics algorithm with many capabilities. The Guardsman is a handheld thermal imager designed for guard safety. Teich also explains that the company’s high-volume business in the auto market lowers costs on all FLIR Thermal Imaging products.

Tom Harada, Managing Director of the Security Systems Division, reports that the Pentax Atmospheric Interference Reduction Product technology (PAIR) has been named the best video product at the ISC West New Product Showcase. He explains that great optics and the capability of reducing atmospheric interference are long-forgotten, but vital concepts in making total videos, and this is what Pentax has addressed with its PAIR technology.

Angela Oberman, Product Manager of the Vindicator Technologies Product Line of Honeywell Security Solutions, indicates that the Vindicator product line is an integrated access control, intrusion detection, CCTV system that takes input from these disparate systems and displays them on the headin to create an integrated command and control system. The core market is Air Force,  Army, Navy, Utilities, Chemical Plants and other critical infrastructure.
