Smart effective border security and immigration enforcement

By Janet Napolitano

[Editor’s note: DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano delivered the following speech at American University in Washington, DC, on Oct. 5.]

What has the country done in the decade since 9/11 to strengthen its homeland defense and security, and better protect our people, property and way of life?

A great question that can and will create a lot of debate, but in my opinion, a fantastic job, so far. Homeland security is an enduring concept in both peace and war. The global war on terrorism is a long war and it may take 25 to 30 years because of the nature of the threat.

Perimeters represent natural and/or manmade boundaries that enclose physical assets, ranging from nuclear power plants, air and sea ports, to entrances of commercial office buildings and retail stores.

As a product-agnostic provider of HSPD-12 compliant design and installation services for physical security systems in federal buildings, our team has learned significant lessons about key phases of most projects.

First, it is critical to know the answers to certain questions prior to any design and installation activity.

Second, the type of project -- whether it is a remodeling or new construction of federal entities -- can create its own challenges.

Third, testing and validation is the final due diligence necessary for a successful system.

According to Howard Ryan, Total Alert Systems is a one-stop shopping mass notification portal used by government agencies, DOD, industrial and health care users. It is capable of sending alerts to cell phones, giant voice, billboards, text messaging and handheld radios. The company is a successor to Desktop Alert, which was a Finalist and Winner in previous GSN Award programs. Despite Desktop Alert’s success in signing up the U.S. Army and Air Force, he felt the name was too limiting and he created Total Alert to incorporate new products.

A few moments after Pentax Ricoh accepted its 2001 Award for “Best Specialized CCTV Lens,” Tom Harada sat down with GSN to talk about his engineers’ strategy of getting back to the basics in optical technology. “When it comes to long-range zoom lenses,” he points out, “the longer the distance, the more difficult everything gets.

GSN caught up with Dave Natelson for a quick interview at the Cocktail Reception at the 2011 Awards Dinner, before he learned that Nasatka had earned a Winner’s Trophy in the Best Perimeter Protection System in Awards Program. Mr. Natelson indicated the company had been named a Finalist for its steel plate barrier that uses an electric, as opposed to a hydraulic system, that had recently completed a 1.5 million cycle without any human interference – which he pointed out translates into a great return on investment for users.
