Commentary and Opinions

CCTV -- check. Radiation detection -- check. Remote operations -- check. Non-intrusion inspection technology -- check. And the list goes on.

Machine-to-machine communications, or M2M, is the automated interchange of information between several machines or between machines and a control center. In more and more areas of business and life, M2M is making entirely new business models possible by simplifying workflows and improving processes.

M2M takes the big data conversation to new levels because it allows users to collect data, analyze it and gain deeper insights into production and processes.

The time has come to re-think embassy security. The Department of State recently called for a “more serious and sustained commitment from Congress” to address security deficiencies at high-risk posts around the world, in the wake of last year's attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which resulted in the death of four people, including U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens.

As I waited for a flight recently at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, I thumbed through a newspaper that had been left behind at a gate. A headline said, “Arizona 18th in U.S. in Aircraft Bird Strikes.”

While travelling through TSA lines at an airport, I often wonder how to make the process more efficient. TSA obviously has thought about this, too. Online pre-screening for frequent travelers and advanced imaging technology have been added to their repertoire to ease the screening process. Both advances are technological and both aim to increase efficiency and decrease human contact. Technology and humans cannot be on divergent paths in the homeland security and law enforcement arenas. They must work together.

EADS North America, recipient of GSN’s 2013 Platinum Award for “Best Wide Area Persistent Surveillance”, is one of the largest aerospace and defense companies in the world, as Joe Venezuela points out. Having been involved in border security and maritime security for over 20 years, the company has developed software and hardware solutions that run the gamut from turn-key solutions to individual sensors and custom-tailored solutions for clients in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Western Europe and Asia.

Textron Defense Systems has a wide range of products for the security market, according to Patti Shaffner, including its aerial ISR system, unmanned aerial systems and iCommand, which brings them all together. But the system that won the platinum award in GSN’s 2013 Border Security Awards Program for Best Outdoor Ground Sensors was the MicroObserver® Unattended Ground Sensor System, a complete solution containing sensor node, gateway and camera repeater.

According to Bobby Brown, VP for Homeland Security, Telephonics business units include a Maritime Surveillance unit, a Communications unit and an Integrated Surveillance Group, which produces a ground-based Advanced Radar System (ARSS), with 1,600 systems deployed globally.  In recent years, Telephonics has collaborated with Customs and Border Protection to develop a package called the Mobile Surveillance System (MSS) that includes ground radar, pan-tilt cameras and a C2 system, with 44 systems presently in CBP’s inventory.

Paul Mackler, President of Eagle Eye Expositions, expresses great satisfaction with exhibitor turn-out and quality of the sessions in the 2013 Expo. He gives a lot of credit for the event’s success to his Advisory Board, which included Jason P. Ahern and many other former high-ranking officials in CBP, DEA, ICE and other government agencies. Mackler also announces that the first annual U.S.- Canada Cross Border Conference will take place in Detroit, MI on September 12-13, to help advance the Beyond Border agreement signed by U.S.
