Commentary and Opinions

In 2007, I said the following when referring to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) policy on container security: “Perhaps, the dumbest policy, model, or standard of all is the sealed-door standard.”

Five years later, despite technological advances and use by the private sector and military, CBP is still focused on container “doors” as a security measure. CBP has still not developed an alternative.

Port security seems to be the forgotten child when it comes to preparing for disasters, at least in the public eye. Potential threats to aviation and mass transit generate many more conversations, and for good reason, but the risks posed to ports, primarily from cargo, cannot be ignored.

A cargo container looks innocuous, just a square, metal box loaded with goods…right? This impression could not be further from the truth.

A wireless sensor network system developed by Lockheed Martin can revolutionize the way users obtain discreet persistent situational awareness and characterization of their surroundings, says the company in an Oct. 12 news release.

The Self-Powered Ad-hoc Network (SPAN) system, a network of "Field-and Forget" ground sensors, provides unobtrusive, continuous surveillance supporting multiple missions and applications.

By Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS)

Today, we meet to discuss this nation’s progress in bringing about safety, security and resiliency against terrorism since the attacks of 9/11.

But before we look back, I want to acknowledge and remember all the firefighters, police officers, and ordinary people who lost their lives that Tuesday morning. Remembering those who died must inspire us to make this nation better and safer.

America is immeasurably more secure today at the tenth anniversary of 9/11 because of the enormous energy, resources, leadership, planning, and blood that we have poured into our national military and domestic security efforts.

On 9/11, we lost nearly 3,000 innocent Americans, murdered while going about their daily lives. It was an attack of great cleverness, great daring, great surprise and simplicity. This was the greatest single loss of American life since the Battle of Antietam.
