Commentary and Opinions

Port security seems to be the forgotten child when it comes to preparing for disasters, at least in the public eye. Potential threats to aviation and mass transit generate many more conversations, and for good reason, but the risks posed to ports, primarily from cargo, cannot be ignored.

A cargo container looks innocuous, just a square, metal box loaded with goods…right? This impression could not be further from the truth.

A wireless sensor network system developed by Lockheed Martin can revolutionize the way users obtain discreet persistent situational awareness and characterization of their surroundings, says the company in an Oct. 12 news release.

The Self-Powered Ad-hoc Network (SPAN) system, a network of "Field-and Forget" ground sensors, provides unobtrusive, continuous surveillance supporting multiple missions and applications.

Today, we meet to discuss this nation’s progress in bringing about safety, security and resiliency against terrorism since the attacks of 9/11.

But before we look back, I want to acknowledge and remember all the firefighters, police officers, and ordinary people who lost their lives that Tuesday morning. Remembering those who died must inspire us to make this nation better and safer.

America is immeasurably more secure today at the tenth anniversary of 9/11 because of the enormous energy, resources, leadership, planning, and blood that we have poured into our national military and domestic security efforts.

On 9/11, we lost nearly 3,000 innocent Americans, murdered while going about their daily lives. It was an attack of great cleverness, great daring, great surprise and simplicity. This was the greatest single loss of American life since the Battle of Antietam.

During the past year, the Homeland Security & Defense Business Council has issued a series of monthly papers encapsulating the major topics that have shaped our nation’s approach to homeland security. Thirteen monographs have highlighted industry and government’s joint effort to confront the challenges, and develop solutions to successfully focus on the historic mission to create a more prepared, responsive, resilient, safer and secure homeland.

GSN caught up with Dave Natelson for a quick interview at the Cocktail Reception at the 2011 Awards Dinner, before he learned that Nasatka had earned a Winner’s Trophy in the Best Perimeter Protection System in Awards Program. Mr. Natelson indicated the company had been named a Finalist for its steel plate barrier that uses an electric, as opposed to a hydraulic system, that had recently completed a 1.5 million cycle without any human interference – which he pointed out translates into a great return on investment for users.

Intergraph, short for “interactive graphics”, is a software company that uses graphics to help its clients visualize complex information, according to Bob Scott. According to veteran technology sales executive Chris Peterson, Vector Firm is a management consulting business which specializes in the sales and business development departments of security businesses. The company’s clients range from multi-billion dollar contractors to $5-million systems integrators that want to break the $5-million barrier. Vector’s contribution to these companies, he says, is building strategies, processes and tools, both on a strategic and a tactical level.

Lenses for government applications in border security, maritime and port security and critical infrastructure protection are at the high end of the specialized lenses produced by Pentax Imaging, according to Andrew Shemo. BRS Labs, as president John Frazzini describes, has invented an artificial intelligence-based video surveillance platform that has injected advanced artificial neuro network technology into the analysis of video surveillance data. The company has seen a substantial growth in business over the last few months, he says, as the market has recognized BRS Labs’ rethinking of the core problem in video surveillance, which is that there are far too many cameras being deployed and not enough human monitors to evaluate the data being captured.
