Meteorologists sometimes can predict disasters with a high degree of certainty days, if not weeks, before they make landfall. Other times, however, the public is warned within mere minutes; and then there are those events that can’t be predicted at all.

It’s hard to fathom that as late as 2012 the U.S. State Department estimated 27 million people around the world are trapped in a life of slavery.

Recent high-profile news stories have served as a painful reminder that even in the U.S. individuals are held against their will, subjected to forced labor, prostitution or other criminal activity. According to a 2013 Congressional Research Service report, as many as 100,000 children in the U.S. may be victims of domestic human trafficking.

Machine-to-machine communications, or M2M, is the automated interchange of information between several machines or between machines and a control center. In more and more areas of business and life, M2M is making entirely new business models possible by simplifying workflows and improving processes.

M2M takes the big data conversation to new levels because it allows users to collect data, analyze it and gain deeper insights into production and processes.

It is possible to forecast the types of warfare that one’s terrorist adversary is likely to conduct, whether as an organized group or as “lone wolf” operatives. Such a forecasting capability is especially crucial when complete information about one’s terrorist adversary is lacking. This is important because several recent high visibility terrorist attacks could have been pre-empted and thwarted if the intelligence and law enforcement agencies that were tracking these groups and operatives had possessed such a forecasting capability.

The disastrous results of the Boston Marathon bombings are testimony to the ineffectiveness of current security systems to predict and help avert devastating attacks. Although Boston’s security infrastructure was quite effective at post-disaster forensics, enabling the identification and neutralization of two suspects only days after the bombings, the community still had to suffer hundreds of injuries, loss of lives and hundreds of millions of dollars in collateral damage.
