At this moment, 1 out of every 100 adult Americans is behind bars. That’s 2.3 million convicted offenders, more than 60 percent of whom were sentenced for non-violent offenses.

During my entire 23-year career as a police officer, I never dealt specifically with an individual who admitted they were a victim of human trafficking.

That doesn’t mean that human trafficking isn’t a problem, or that it doesn’t happen in the United States every day. On the contrary, the 2011 U.S. Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report estimates that 17,500 individuals are trafficked into the U.S. each year.

We are going through a radical shift in the way people work and use computers. Increasing availability and affordability of wireless broadband is giving the global workforce true mobility, for the first time in history. Many of them will use smartly designed mobile rugged computers for their everyday computing and communication needs, instead of traditional laptops.

Whenever a crisis requires a large evacuation, effective communication becomes vital to the success of any response operation. All too often, emergency situations create obstacles to communication -- power may be cut off, access routes may be blocked, isolated response teams may be operating with inaccurate information, or teams may have difficulty getting instructions to large groups of frightened civilians.

In Washington, attention has shifted from the daily grind towards a hyper-partisan presidential campaign. Battle lines are sharply cast between Republican challenger, Governor Mitt Romney, and the incumbent, President Barack Obama.

While all eyes are on the economy, national security challenges abound. Obama’s killing of Bin Laden and targeting terrorists with Predator strikes argues his prowess on terrorism. Iran’s nuclear weapon pursuits are hindered by cyber-sabotage.
