Huntsville, AL-based Intergraph will help public safety agencies transition to Next Generation 911 with the newest version of its computer-aided dispatch software. Over 260 million people have been victims of data breaches and increased risk of identity theft since the Target revelations, yet nearly 80 percent have done nothing to protect their privacy or to guard their financial accounts from fraud, according to a new quarterly survey released by Denver-based idRADAR.

"There is a national data breach epidemic, and consumers shockingly show very few signs of concern. Most are taking no measures to protect themselves," said Tom Feige, CEO of idRADAR.

Commentary and Opinions

In 1992, the FBI established its Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) division. It is the largest division of the FBI and it provides state, local, and federal law enforcement and criminal justice agencies with access to centralized information, such as fingerprint identification records, criminal histories and sex offender registrations. Due to the extreme sensitivity of this information, the agency has mandated enhanced security measures to protect access to it.

One of the biggest challenges law enforcement officials face is dealing with gang-related activity. According to a report released by the National Gang Intelligence Center late last year, there are a more than 33,000 criminally active gangs with approximately 1.4 million members in the United States. That’s a 40 percent increase in gang membership in just two years.

High-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors are the recognized gold standard for detection and identification of characteristic gamma rays from nuclear or radiological sources. No other detector comes close to matching their extremely high resolution and sensitivity. However, until recently, their use outside the laboratory has been limited. A number of challenges had to be overcome before they could be deployed routinely in the field.

A widely held belief in the law enforcement community is that the more information sharing that takes place among different agencies, the better opportunities law enforcement officials have to connect the dots on possible criminal activity. Tips and leads, or Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) from citizens, can help piece together what otherwise might remain silos of pertinent clues or data -- never a connection to be made.

It’s a distressing feeling when you’re in the middle of an unfolding disaster, and suddenly it hits you -- your plans and resources are being overwhelmed by the event. At this point or soon thereafter, you’ll likely ask yourself a series of questions: How and when will we re-establish services for customers and employees? What will this disaster cost us in terms of revenue, reputation and recovery expenses? How can we avoid being in this position again?
