Commentary and Opinions

As expected, the media and others are paying closer attention to this anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11 than they have in recent years. For whatever reason, 10-year, 25-year, or similarly numbered anniversaries of tragedies garner increased interest and coverage.

In recognition of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, many take a look back at how a revitalized concern for national security spurred numerous initiatives to improve the nation’s defense system. A decade of technological innovation and policy evolution later, the U.S. has made great strides in securing U.S. borders. In retrospect, many of these changes are byproducts of lessons learned from the official 9/11 investigation.

Activists who object to what they see as the coziness between the U.S. Government and the nation’s largest financial institutions are planning twin protests on Saturday, September 17th.

One protest, called Occupy Wall Street, will supposedly take place in the “real world,” somewhere near Wall Street, in lower Manhattan. The other protest, known as US Day of Rage, is apparently going to unfold in cyberspace, perhaps with the active participation of the hacktivist group, ‘Anonymous.’

The most compelling reasons for having video cameras in police cars are to help increase convictions, reduce liability lawsuits and settle citizen complaints. Video can also be an extremely valuable tool in helping administrators identify areas where officer safety training may need to be enhanced or monitor adherence to department policy.

Whether it is a nearby military base, a downtown Class A office building, your favorite sports arena or the school your children attend, the threat of terrorist action on any one of these facilities is real.
