Commentary and Opinions

In May 2010, the Federal Communications Commission approved the use of 700 MHz spectrum for public safety broadband networks based on commercial, fourth-generation (4G) cellular technology.

By Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS)

Today, we meet to discuss this nation’s progress in bringing about safety, security and resiliency against terrorism since the attacks of 9/11.

But before we look back, I want to acknowledge and remember all the firefighters, police officers, and ordinary people who lost their lives that Tuesday morning. Remembering those who died must inspire us to make this nation better and safer.

9/11 unleashed ripples of uncertainty and fear of further attacks in the following months. While this was expected, given the enormity of the event, did the federal and state response fuel the terror of terrorism?

I would argue that it did, and that effective risk communication strategies are still lacking 10 years later. Furthermore, failure to implement a comprehensive risk communication strategy that covers natural and man-made disasters will continue to undermine preparedness, response and recovery efforts.

America is immeasurably more secure today at the tenth anniversary of 9/11 because of the enormous energy, resources, leadership, planning, and blood that we have poured into our national military and domestic security efforts.

On 9/11, we lost nearly 3,000 innocent Americans, murdered while going about their daily lives. It was an attack of great cleverness, great daring, great surprise and simplicity. This was the greatest single loss of American life since the Battle of Antietam.

As expected, the media and others are paying closer attention to this anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11 than they have in recent years. For whatever reason, 10-year, 25-year, or similarly numbered anniversaries of tragedies garner increased interest and coverage.
