The U.S. crime rate continues to fall, according to the latest FBI's release based on Uniform Crime Reporting from police departments, but researchers say those numbers, which have been on a downward slide since the 1990s, don't tell the whole story. That's because the federal report does not track online property crime, credit card fraud, or identity theft, all of which are increasing, according to researchers at the University of New Haven and the State University of New York at Albany.

Commentary and Opinions

Whenever a crisis requires a large evacuation, effective communication becomes vital to the success of any response operation. All too often, emergency situations create obstacles to communication -- power may be cut off, access routes may be blocked, isolated response teams may be operating with inaccurate information, or teams may have difficulty getting instructions to large groups of frightened civilians.
In Washington, attention has shifted from the daily grind towards a hyper-partisan presidential campaign. Battle lines are sharply cast between Republican challenger, Governor Mitt Romney, and the incumbent, President Barack Obama. While all eyes are on the economy, national security challenges abound. Obama’s killing of Bin Laden and targeting terrorists with Predator strikes argues his prowess on terrorism. Iran’s nuclear weapon pursuits are hindered by cyber-sabotage.
As law enforcement agencies strive to keep our nation safe from terrorists, a growing amount of controversy and distrust regarding the unconstitutional practices of religious and ethnic profiling by law enforcement is being reported from around the country. There is a group within the NYPD that spies on and profiles Muslims, countless reports of federal agents recruiting informants and/or provocateurs into Muslim communities and Rep Peter King’s congressional hearings about the “Radicalization of the American Muslim Community.”
Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR) has drawn the attention of law enforcement across the nation because of its ability to capture, categorize and catalogue important data for analysis of specific patterns of criminal activity as it occurs and during its planning stages.
In 1992, the FBI established its Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) division. It is the largest division of the FBI and it provides state, local, and federal law enforcement and criminal justice agencies with access to centralized information, such as fingerprint identification records, criminal histories and sex offender registrations. Due to the extreme sensitivity of this information, the agency has mandated enhanced security measures to protect access to it.
