According to the Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies and the Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics survey, local police departments have about 461,000 sworn officers. LexisNexis Risk Solutions has announced the results of a comprehensive study focused on the use of social media by law enforcement for crime investigation and prevention. The study, a follow-up to one conducted in 2012, revealed that social media use remains high -- eight out of 10 law enforcement professionals use it – with the most common use being for crime investigations (63 percent).

High-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors are the recognized gold standard for detection and identification of characteristic gamma rays from nuclear or radiological sources. No other detector comes close to matching their extremely high resolution and sensitivity. However, until recently, their use outside the laboratory has been limited. A number of challenges had to be overcome before they could be deployed routinely in the field.

A widely held belief in the law enforcement community is that the more information sharing that takes place among different agencies, the better opportunities law enforcement officials have to connect the dots on possible criminal activity.
