People: Adm. Thomas Fargo joins AtHoc strategic advisor board

AtHoc, Inc., of Burlingame, CA, appointed Admiral Thomas Fargo (USN-Ret.) to the company’s board of strategic advisors. AtHoc provides network-centric emergency notification systems widely used for military as well as civilian first responder operations. Adm. Fargo, who retired after a 35-year career in the Navy, including six tours in Washington, DC, currently serves as president of Trex Enterprises Corp., and is CEO of its Loea Corp. subsidiary, which develops high bandwidth wireless communications.

People: Dean Meyer named Pelco COO

Dean Meyer has been named chief operating officer of Pelco, the video security systems manufacturer recently acquired by France’s Schneider Electric combine. He will report to Pelco CEO David McDonald. Meyer was previously president of Texas-based TAC Americas, where he grew the firm’s business five-fold during his seven-year tenure.

People: B&B ARMR parent company ISSI names Cleveland to top post

Integrated Security Systems, Inc., of Carrollton, TX, announced that Russell Cleveland has taken over as chairman of the board, replacing C.A. Rundell, Jr., who retired October 31. Cleveland has been a director of the homeland security products and services company, best known as parent company of perimeter security producer B&B ARMR, since February 2001. He continues to serve as president, CEO and majority shareholder of Renaissance Capital Group, which specializes in investments for `small cap’ companies.

People: Vice Adm. Moran joins Unitech simulation team

Unitech, the Centerville, VA-based provider of homeland security-related training and technology solutions, announced the appointment of Vice Adm. Kevin Moran (USN-Ret.) to its board of directors. During his 30-year Navy career, Moran established himself as a leader in training and education. He will help Unitech develop its training and simulation strategy.

People: Langevin questions power grid cybersecurity

October 22nd, 2007

In a detailed letter addressed to Joseph Kelliher, chair of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Rep James Langevin (D-RI), chair of the House Subsommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity and Science and Technology, expressed grave concern that power grid control computers are too often linked to open cyber networks, increasing risks that those systems are vulnerable to cyber attack. Langevin urged Kelliher to compel the industry to carry out remedial actions, originally outlined in a June advisory distributed by the Electric Sector Information Sharing and Analysis Center.

Capitol Hill: Sen. Collins hails homeland security "national strategy"

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) hailed the updated National Strategy for Homeland Security, released by President Bush earlier this month. "The updated strategy improves upon the original in many crucial aspects," she said. "It now recognizes, for example, the threat posed not just by Al Qaeda, but also by homegrown terrorists. The updated strategy is also now all-hazards, emphasizing the fact that terrorism, catastrophic natural disasters and other hazards require many similar capabilities."

People: Kauffman to take key post in TSA Office of Intelligence

The Transportation Security Administration has named Keith Kauffman as assistant administrator for the TSA Office of Intelligence. As such, Kauffman will provide a daily intelligence overview for TSA Administrator Kip Hawley. Prior to joining TSA, Kauffman served for 24 years with the National Security Agency, where he was instrumental in creating the NSA Threat Operations Center.
