Corporate News: Cooper Industries acquires Roam Secure

Cooper Industries, Ltd., of Houston, TX, announced it has acquired Roam Secure, of Arlington, VA. The acquisition enhances Cooper’s capabilities as a leading provider of mass notification systems. Roam Secure, a privately-held entity, provides text-based alerting using a system that offers full functionality and interoperability. The takeover is part of Cooper’s long-term acquisition strategy. Earlier acquisitions have included well-known mass notification vendors such as Wheelock and MadahCom. Roam Secure will become part of the Cooper notification platform, reporting through Cooper Menvier.

Corporate News: BAE plans anti-missile laser tests to protect airlines

BAE Systems, Plc, Europe’s largest aerospace and defense company, announced that it will begin testing anti-missile technology on American Airlines flights in April, as part of a $29 million DHS contract to develop laser systems to protect planes from missiles fired by terrorists. Government and BAE officials said the anti-missile systems won't be tested on passenger flights. However, the tests could involve more than 1,000 flights, to determine how well the technology holds up under the rigors of flight.

L-1 to acquire Bioscrypt in $44 million stock swap

L-1 Identity Solutions, Inc., one of the leading companies in the biometrics sector, has continued its buying spree with the announcement that it plans to acquire Bioscrypt Inc., based in Ontario, Canada, a provider of access control systems, in a stock-for-stock transaction valued at approximately $44 million.

FDA loosens labeling requirements on stockpiled drugs

The Food and Drug Administration issued an interim final rule on December 28 that would allow pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors to affix labels providing far less information than is normally required when they ship their drugs, biological products and medical devices to the nation’s Strategic National Stockpile.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Regional Counterterrorism Task Force (CTTF) has accepted delivery of a new training scenario developed by Environmental Tectonics Corp., which simulates the takeover of a six-classroom
high school building by a number of armed terrorists. The program, designed to run on ETC’s Advanced Disaster Management Simulator (ADMS-Command), is designed to train first responders, police and other agencies how to react appropriately and mitigate the hostage situation to best avoid casualties.

Bosch to buy Extreme CCTV in $91 M deal

Bosch Security Systems, the diversified security supplier and integrator based in Stuttgart, Germany has announced it will purchase 100 percent of the shares of Extreme CCTV Inc., a Canadian company that manufactures infrared illuminators, long-range cameras and license plate capturing systems, for approximately US $91 million.

Pactiv Corp., of Lake Forest, IL, has given the traveling public a Christmas present of sorts: Free Hefty One-Zip one-quart slider bags. The Pactiv Hefty bags are provided at no charge at many of the nation’s major airports, enabling millions of Americans to comply with the Transportation Security Administration 3-1-1 carry-on guidelines for air travel. Those guidelines specify that liquid or gel toiletries must be stored comfortably in a one-quart size, clear plastic zip-top bag, no container holds more than 3 ounces and that there can only be one bag per passenger. Pactiv estimates over 10 million Hefty bags will be distributed this year.
