Corporate News: SAIC-VA extend small business procurement agreement

Science Applications International Corp. and the Department of Veterans Affairs Center for Veterans Enterprise (CVE) have extended their agreement under which SAIC furnishes technical assistance and procurement opportunities to veteran-owned small businesses through 2009. In the last fiscal year (2007), SAIC reported that 4.5 percent of its subcontract awards were issued to service-disabled veteran-owned businesses, significantly exceeding the government mandated 3 percent goal. In total, SAIC subcontracted $206 million to veteran-owned businesses. Overall, SAIC issued more than $1.2 billion in subcontract awards to small businesses for the same period.

Corporate News: Astaro goes "green" for energy savings, security efficiency

Astaro Corp., of Burlington, MA, a vendor of integrated security appliances, announced it has joined The Green Grid, a global consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems. The company plans to collaborate with other members to improve and promote efficiency in network security. The Astaro solution, available as a software, hardware or virtual appliance, integrates disparate network security products onto a single solution, allowing customers to minimize energy consumption and reduce physical waste while tailoring to any network infrastructure. The Green Grid seeks to provide industry-wide recommendations on best practices, metrics and technologies that will improve overall data center and business computing energy efficiencies.

Corporate News: ESS sponsors chemical plant anti-terror exercise

ESS, the Tempe, AZ-based provider of environmental, health and safety and crisis management software, is sponsoring a chemical facility anti-terrorism exercise during ESS Expo.08, where organizations are demonstrating the latest information technology tools for crisis management. The exercise begins with a simulation titled Green Scorpion, in which terrorists gain access to a large chemical processing facility. Emergency teams will implement response strategies that are designed to stop terrorists, free hostages and prevent or mitigate damage to the area and the surrounding area. Participants will include representatives from ESS crisis management technology solution partners SAIC, L-3 Communications, RP Flight Systems., SRA International and special effects provider Double F Productions.

Corporate News: PharmAthene acquires Avecia Biologics biodefense vaccines

PharmAthene, Inc., a biodefense company based in Annapolis, MD, purchased all of the assets and intellectual property related to Avecia Biologics Limited’s biodefense vaccines business. The transaction adds three vaccines to PharmAthene’s pipeline: a second generation recombinant Protective Antigen (rPA) anthrax vaccine, a recombinant dual antigen plague vaccine and a third generation rPA anthrax vaccine program. The deal is expected to aid PharmAthene’s efforts to win a recently announced U.S. Government solicitation to procure 25 million doses of an rPA vaccine. The Avecia acquisition will consist of a cash payment of $20 million. In addition, Avecia will be eligible to receive milestone payments totaling $20 million in the aggregate, contingent upon receipt of procurement contracts for the anthrax rPA vaccines and the plague vaccine, and royalties on sales to the U.S. Government.

Orsus, of New York, NY, and ioimage, of Herzliya, Israel and Denton, TX, announced the formation of a partnership to provide the full benefits of an Orsus Situation Management solution with video analytics from ioimage. As a result of this partnership, Situator from Orsus now fully supports intelligent video encoders, and IP cameras from ioimage. The alliance also enables those who have deployed or plan to implement video analytics solutions from ioimage to seamlessly integrate these devices with Situator.

Security exec salaries capped at $612,196 for government contracts

Executives can earn more than $612,196 per year working for security or defense contractors, but that’s the maximum "allowable" compensation for any individual exec that the Office of Management and Budget will permit a federal contractor to include in its cost-plus government contracts.

Cisco Systems, Inc., announced it has officially renewed ARINC Inc., of Annapolis, MD, as an Authorized Technology Provider (ATP) for Cisco’s IP Interoperability and Collaboration Systems (IPICS). The renewal means ARINC will continue to deploy Cisco’s advanced IPICS technology for interoperable communications in central communications offices, mobile command vehicles or in tactical communications kits, connecting to IP or non-IP wired, wireless or satellite networks. ARINC, a portfolio company of The Carlyle Group, provides communications, engineering and integration solutions for commercial, defense and government customers worldwide.

Corporate News: Hirsch verification technology gets TSA approval

Hirsch Electronics, a leading manufacturer of access control and identity management solutions, announced that its Verification Station’s biometric technology passed the Transportation Security Administration’s rigorous testing and was placed on the TSA’s "Biometrics for Access Control" Qualified Products List (QPL). Hirsch developed the Verification Station, model family RUU, in conjunction with Cogent Systems, a global biometric identification solutions provider. Hirsch’s RUU integrates Cogent’s ID-Gate biometric subsystem, one of only two products that met TSA’s testing requirements for airport physical access control.
