Video surveillance in a different "City by the Bay"

One by one, large and small cities across the United States are installing lots of video cameras to watch their citizens in public spaces, connecting those cameras to monitoring centers by fiber optic cable or wireless "mesh" networks; thereby attempting to decrease crime.

Contracts: El Paso schools sign up with LenSec IP video surveillance solution

The El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) has selected Lensec, the Houston-based provider of IP-based video surveillance solutions, to provide a district-wide IP video surveillance solution for EPISD’s network of middle and high school campuses. With more than 63,000 students on 92 campuses, EPISD is the seventh largest district in Texas and the 57th largest district in the U.S. School officials said a key factor in the selection process was the quick emergency response capability of LenSec’s network video surveillance which is expected to provide a substantial, positive impact on safety concerns. The new system also has the ability to archive and document incidents for the accurate execution of both administrative and police procedures.

Contracts: ICx wins $4.8 million robot bomb detector award

ICx Technologies was awarded a contract worth $4.8 million for explosives detectors and related technical services. The U.S. Army’s Robotics System Joint Program Office in Warren, MI, placed the order, calling for delivery of the Fido XT handheld detection systems for use in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Fido is an advanced, ultra-sensitive explosives sensor with sensitivity levels comparable to specially trained canines. In addition to hardware, a portion of the award is for training services at the ICx test and training range -- a 40-acre facility in a remote and undisclosed location – which is fully licensed for controlled storage and use of explosives. The range is specially equipped for training troops and law enforcement personnel in advanced, trace-detection techniques.

The Problem:
The Boston Marathon, one of the oldest and most prestigious sporting events in the U.S., follows a 26-mile course through the City of Boston and several surrounding suburbs. This year’s race, which took place on April 21, attracted more than 20,000 registered runners and more than one million spectators, an enormous crowd which required a dramatic improvement in the security measures undertaken by the local public safety agencies.

Contracts: ICE names VACI to provide detainee phone access

Immigration & Customs Enforcement signed a contract with Value Added Communications, Inc., (VACI), of Plano, TX, to ensure that detainees in the custody of various U.S. Government agencies have free telephone access, as mandated by ICE’s National Detention Standards. ICE identified entities including foreign embassies, consulates, immigration courts and approved pro bono and community-based free immigration legal service providers. Under this contract, which has no stated dollar value, VACI will host a "pro-bono network," allowing all ICE detainees access to identified entities.

Contracts: Tiburon wins $3.1 million Florida police dispatch contract

Tiburon, Inc., of Pleasanton, CA, has signed a $3.1 million contract to provide an integrated public safety system for Polk County in Florida. This comprehensive system includes new computer aided dispatch (CAD), law enforcement records management, jail management, civil process and mobile reporting systems to support the public safety and justice agencies of Polk County. Tiburon, headquartered in Pleasanton, CA, is a wholly owned subsidiary of CompuDyne Corp., providing automated public safety and justice systems to meet the needs of law enforcement, fire, rescue, corrections and justice agencies. In addition to serving Polk County, Tiburon provides automated public safety and justice operations for several other Florida jurisdictions, including the counties of Orange, Volusia, Brevard, Pasco, Hernando, Marion and Nassau, as well as the cities of Miami and Melbourne.

CCAT eyes funding for first responder technologies
