ICE investigators plan to "read" typewriter ribbons

It may seem a bit archaic, but the Immigration and Customs (ICE) unit of DHS is planning to purchase a piece of forensic equipment, known as a Ribbon Analysis Workstation, which will enable its investigators to capture, download to a computer and print out the contents of single-strike carbon typewriter ribbon.

Contracts: U.S. Genomics scores $9.1 million from S&T

Woburn, MA-based U.S. Genomics will continue development and testing of its biological sensor to detect airborne pathogens using single-molecule DNA mapping technology under a $9.1 million Phase IIIX contract awarded by DHS’s Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate. "The resources provided under the contract will allow us to perform extensive operational testing and to advance the capabilities of our prototype systems," CEO John Canepa said in a statement. That system will "rapidly detect multiple bacterial pathogens, toxins and viruses simultaneously in an environmental sample using a single reagent set," according to Canepa.

CSC's DHS IT contract could total $391 million

CSC, of Falls Church, VA, has won a DHS secure managed data center services contract potentially worth $391 million. The contract has a six-month base, with six one-year options. There is also a further option to convert the last one-year period into a two-year option. If all possible options are exercised, the contract can reach that $391 million mark. The DHS award to CSC was made under the Enterprise Acquisition Gateway for Leading Edge Solutions (EAGLE), a DHS department-wide platform for acquiring IT service solutions in the following five categories: Engineering Design, Development, Implementation and Integration; Operations and Maintenance; Independent Test, Evaluation, Validation and Verification; Software Development; and Management Support Services.
Contracts: Raytheon wins $4.7 million for stand-off radiation detection

The DHS Domestic Nuclear Detection Office has awarded Waltham, MA-based Raytheon Co.,. a phase 2 contract to continue development of a stand-off radiation detection system that can determine the type and location of radiation sources at much greater distances than current technologies. Phase 2, an eight-month contract for $4.7 million, involves engineering a prototype design. The entire four-phase development program is worth a potential $9.9 million if all four options are exercised.

Contracts: QinetiQ North America scores Kennedy Space Center subcontract from Abacus

The Mission Solutions Group of QinetiQ North America, of Fairfax, VA, has been awarded a contract by Abacus Technology Corp, of Chevy Chase, MD, has been selected to support information management and communications activities for NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The contract will run for up to nine years, with a potential value of $144 million. As a subcontractor, QinetiQ North America will provide systems engineering, sustaining engineering and imaging and timing services.

Contracts: Lockheed Martin wins $24 million CDC terror prep contract

Lockheed Martin has been selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to provide information technology services to the agency’s Coordinating Office for Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response (COTPER) in Atlanta. This task order has one base year and three option years, with an estimated program value of more than $24 million. Awarded within the scope of an already competed Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) under a General Services Administration schedule, the contract calls for Lockheed Martin to provide information technology support to elements of COTPER including systems architecture, Web design, application development and support, management, and security.

Aon Risk to advance DOE first $100 million in aviation insurance claims

The Department of Energy has just awarded a contract valued at $484,097 to Aon Risk Services, Inc. to provide aviation liability insurance for aircraft flown from Nevada and New Mexico by DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration.
Contracts: BAE Systems wins $13 million armored car contract

BAE Systems has received a $13 million contract from the U.S. Government for the purchase of approximately 100 armored commercial vehicles, including armored Chevrolet Suburbans and armored Sprinter vans.The armored commercial vehicles will be manufactured in Cincinnati, OH, and production is expected to be completed by December 2008. The vehicles will utilize many of the same technologies and systems as those incorporated in armored military vehicles produced at the same location. BAE Systems is now the largest commercial armored vehicle supplier to the U.S. Government.
