Department of State tightens its HSPD-12 contracts

The U.S. State Department seems to be getting more serious about HSPD-12 and the way it requires outside contractors who perform work at federal offices and facilities to identify themselves.

Contracts: DHS awards Battelle $257 million bio-defense lab contracts

The Department of Homeland Security has awarded the National Defense Institute of Battelle, the Columbus, OH-based nonprofit R&D organization, contracts to manage two high-security laboratories planned at a multi-agency bio-defense campus at the U.S. Army installation in Frederick, MD. The larger assignment is a $257 million, 10-year contract to run a National Institutes of Health biological defense lab at Fort Detrick. The High Containment Integrated Research Facility, scheduled to open in fall, 2008, will house 120 scientists and technicians.

Contracts: Nano-Proprietary wins $1 million HSARPA award

Nano-Proprietary, Inc., was awarded a contract from the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency (HSARPA) worth $1 million to continue development of a carbon nanotube (CNT)-based gas ionizer to replace radioactive sources. The quest for a replacement is part of HSARPA’s goal to reduce use of nuclear material which could be diverted for dirty bombs.

Contracts: SRI wins $36.5M Navy Maritime Domain Awareness contract

The U.S. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) has awarded SRI International, an R&D firm based in St. Petersburg, FL, a five-year, $36.5 million contract to develop a Maritime Domain Awareness system to demonstrate advanced sensing and situation awareness technologies for improved port security. SRI’s National Center for Maritime and Port Security will lead the project, which will require research, technology development, systems integration, testing, demonstrations, deployments, evaluations, policy development and training. The system will be developed and deployed in Tampa Bay, FL.

Contracts: DRS wins $38M Pentagon follow-on security contract

DRS Technologies, Inc., of Parsippany, NJ, received a follow-on $38 million contract, including options, from the Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA), to continue operating the automated and integrated physical security systems at the Pentagon and other Defense Department facilities. PFPA was created shortly after 9/11, incorporating Pentagon police, known as the Defense Protective Service, with a role in providing basic law enforcement and security for the Pentagon and DoD interests in the National Capital Region.

Contracts: Nanotherapeutics wins $20M bioterror detection contract

Nanotherapeutics, Inc., of Alachua, FL, has been awarded a $20 million, four-year contract to develop an inhaled version of the injectable drug, gentamicin, a "first-line" treatment for aerosol exposure to bioterrorism agents. The contract was awarded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. Gentamicin is a broad spectrum antibiotic used for treatment of pneumonic plague and tularemia, Category A bioterrorism agents.

Contracts: Smiths Detection wins $21 million TSA contractThe Transportation Security Administration has awarded Smiths Detection, of Pine Brook, NJ, a $21 million contract for TiX (Threat identification X-ray) systems, which TSA plans to install in airports across the country. TiX systems, originally tested under the TSA’s advanced technology pilot program, can automatically detect explosives and liquids at passenger terminal checkpoints. A key difference between a TiX system and currently used equipment is that a TiX can take multiple views of carry-on bags in a single pass.
