The Problem:
The Boston Marathon, one of the oldest and most prestigious sporting events in the U.S., follows a 26-mile course through the City of Boston and several surrounding suburbs. This year’s race, which took place on April 21, attracted more than 20,000 registered runners and more than one million spectators, an enormous crowd which required a dramatic improvement in the security measures undertaken by the local public safety agencies.
The Solution:
Galaxy Internet Services, which built and manages Brookline’s border-to-border wireless mesh network and various WiFi network projects for the City of Boston, provided secure access to video cameras monitoring the Marathon for law enforcement and safety officials.
Galaxy installed the Strix Access/One Outdoor Wireless System which provided the basis for the rapid temporary deployment of several wireless surveillance systems.
"Taking only minutes to deploy, install and operate, the Integrated Wireless Video Surveillance System (IWVS) powered by Strix Systems Edge wireless mesh network technology enabled ‘live’ viewing and recording of multiple cameras during the event," said a Strix press statement. "In addition to feeding the video to various fixed and mobile command centers, Brookline’s Emergency Operations Center served as host to several state and local public safety agencies."
Officer Scott Wilder, the Director of Technology for the Brookline Police Department, deemed the wireless camera system a great success. "This will revolutionize the way we handle the marathon and other large events," said Wilder. "We can quickly deploy these cameras for temporary use in key areas without the concerns that accompany other video surveillance solutions."
Other Applications:
Strix Access/One solutions have been deployed in hundreds of outdoor and indoor applications for public safety, government, energy, manufacturing, transportation, hospitality and other settings.
