Engineering Services Network Inc. (ESN), of Arlington, VA, announced the formation of a strategic partnership with Avalon Technology, also of Arlington, VA, to deliver streamlined wireless managed services to federal government agencies under a contract provided through the General Services Administration’s Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiative. The two-year contract, with three one-year options, is valued at $93 million. It is designed to facilitate the processes under which federal agencies order telecommunications and wireless services.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a contract to American Superconductor, of Devon, MA, to continue the development and deployment of Project HYDRA, which incorporates AMSC's Secure Super Grids technology in the power delivery network in Manhattan operated by Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. The technology is part of a 'smart grid' solution that utilizes multiple paths for electricity flow in metropolitan power grids to ensure system redundancy when individual circuits are disrupted due to severe weather, traffic accidents or willful destruction. Under the terms of the final contract, DHS will provide up to $25 million in total funding for the $39 million project.

American Science and Engineering, Inc., of Billerica, MA, announced it has received orders worth $4.2 million for multiple Z Backscatter van ZBV X-ray screening systems from unspecified international clients.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection awarded a task order to Unisys Corp., to implement vicinity RFID (radio frequency identification) and new license plate reader technologies along the nation’s northern and southern borders. The deployment will be carried out at the top 39 land ports, which account for 95 percent of all land border crossings into the U.S.

CoreStreet, the Cambridge, MA-based smart credential developer, announced it has been contracted, along with strategic partner Entrust, by Saudi Arabia to provide validation technology for that country’s new national ID card initiative.

The U.S. Coast Guard plans to issue a sole source contract to Safety Systems Corp., of Roselle, IL, to purchase 296 maritime versions of the company’s CIRAS tactical vest.

The Department of Energy on January 30 confirmed the award of a $135 million contract to Wackenhut Corp., to provide guard services at its Oak Ridge, TN, laboratories. The contract, initially issued in 2007, calls for Wackenhut to provide a variety of protective force security services at the nuclear research facility.
