Triple Canopy’s contract dispute in Iraq is denied by GAO

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has tossed out a protest lodged by security services contractorTriple Canopy, Inc., which argued that the U.S. Army had inappropriately awarded a contract to a rival supplier, Sabre International Security, for security work performed in Iraq.
Triple Canopy had maintained that Sabre should have been deemed ineligible for the contract to supply security services at forward operating base Prosperity in Iraq because Sabre does not possess a facilities security clearance and Sabre had an inferior performance record, however the GAO saw things differently.

iRobot sweeps up six grants worth $4.4 million

Bedford, MA-based iRobot Corp., the well-known designer and builder of both commercial and military robots, has been awarded six grants, worth a total of $4.4 million, for projects that will be funded by the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research; Development and Engineering Center; the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center; the Office of Naval Research, and the U.S. Army Research Office. Under the contracts, iRobot will develop technology related to human-robot interaction, unmanned ground and aerial vehicle coordination, semi-autonomous unmanned ground vehicle tele-operation and navigation, and electronics diagnostics and health monitoring. The technologies are expected to result in increased capabilities for iRobot’s military robots, including PackBot, SUGV and Warrior. Thus far, the company has delivered more than 2,000 PackBots.

Defentect monitoring for radiation at DC hospital

Norwalk, CT-based Defentect will install a radiation detection pilot in strategic portal locations at Washington Hospital Center, a 926-bed acute care teaching and research center based in Northwest Washington, DC. Defentect’s solution will monitor for the ingress of radiologically contaminated patients, as well as the illicit egress of on-premise radiological materials used to treat patients. Schaumburg, IL-based Convergint Technologies, a systems integrator, is Defentect’s partner in the installation.

CRI scores $50 million homeland security and counter-terrorism contract from USDA

Mclean, VA-based Communications Resource, Inc (CRI) has received a $50 million follow-on contract from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the provision of continued homeland security and counter-terrorism support to USDA's Office of Security Services. CRI will provide services within the following areas, among others: HSPD-12 smart card development and deployment; critical infrastructure protection; contingency planning and emergency management; capital planning and investment control; and homeland security. The single award contract has a one-year base performance period and four one-year options.

SoBran to test and certify breathing devices

SoBran, Inc., of McLean, VA, has won a U.S. Army contract for the testing and certification of brands and types of breathing devices produced for the military and other first responders. Testing will include both facemasks and fabrication material, and Sobran will examine how they interact with all the most highly toxic chemicals, in various combinations and potency, including sarin and phosgene. Additional tests will evaluate the gear across a range of simulated environments, including terrorist attacks, military conflicts, chemical spills and fire prevention. The contract is worth $4.9 million over four years, according to a spokesperson.

DC Police Alert, which enables the Washington Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to send crime-alert text messages in real time to businesses about crimes committed in their neighborhoods, has been launched. The system uses the Roam Secure Alert Network (RSAN), a product of Roam Secure, Inc., DBA Cooper Notification, a unit of Houston, TX-based Cooper Industries, Ltd. According to the company, Cooper Notification has deployed more than 230 RSAN systems in major metropolitan areas across the country, including Orlando, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Houston and San Francisco.
