FEMA concerned about electro magnetic pulses at Mount Weather

There has been a debate for years as to whether an Electro Magnetic Pulse, also known as EMP, could blow out the electrical circuits and computer systems at the Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center in rural Virginia – a site to which the president and top government leaders might be relocated in case of a nuclear attack – but it now appears that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is actively worried about such a potential EMP threat.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) is conducting an end-user functionality and efficacy assessment of Class 2 CBRN terrorism incident protective ensembles to validate their employment and effectiveness when used by emergency responders in weapons of mass destruction (WMD) or hazardous materials (HAZMAT) environments. The user assessment program will provide the emergency response community with feedback on equipment based on utilization in scenarios that replicate, to the maximum extent possible, conditions that would be experienced in an incident response. Biz Opps: Army seeks training for anti-terror canine teams

The U.S. Army needs canine and handler training for six off-lead explosive detection teams, six dual-purpose explosive detection and patrol teams and training for one master trainer by June 30, 2008. The training will need to commence no later than May 12, 2008. Two contracted Master Trainers will also need to be supplied by the contractor to deploy in theater with the teams. Each contracted Master Trainer shall deploy for a maximum of 90 days, for a total maximum deployment time of 180 days. The objective of this effort is to provide a canine/handler team capability to counter the increased threat of enemy and terrorist forces using Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), direct and indirect fire and sniper attacks. The contractor shall provide a total of six trained explosive detector dogs and six explosive detector/patrol dogs of which all 12 dogs shall become property of the U.S. Government upon completion of training. An option of four dogs shall be held in reserve at the contractor’s facility. Contact at 410-278-0710.

The Department of Homeland Security has been collecting fingerprints and facial photos of foreign travelers arriving at air, sea and land ports as they enter the U.S. for years, and has recently decided it is time to collect -- and match -- similar biometric data obtained from foreign travelers as they exit the U.S.

TSA wants software tool to assess transport risks

The Transportation Security Administration is planning to procure commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software that would enable the agency to assess the terrorist risks and vulnerabilities affecting various modes of transportation in the U.S., including bus, rail, trucks and general aviation.
