The Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology (DHS S&T) Directorate is seeking information on the development of a working concept for an affordable communications system that can provide first responders with resilient and durable communications even after the loss of conventional communications. The request for information, to be submitted in the form of a White Paper up to 25 pages, is the first step in a process that could lead to an operational demonstration within one to three years. FCC hopes for $10 billion from 700MHz auction January 24th

The Federal Communications Commission has announced the date, January 24, 2008, and the bidding procedures for a massive auction of more than a thousand broadcast licenses in the 700 MHz band expected to yield more than $10 billion to Uncle Sam. This includes a portion of that spectrum reserved specifically for public safety purposes which is expected to sell for at least $1.3 billion.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a division of the Department of Commerce, is seeking applications from small businesses to participate in a three-phase program to develop new technologies under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program. Research topics for Phase 1 include investigation of data management and visualization techniques for improving cyber security and development of shortwave infrared cameras for thermal imaging.
