As the battle intensifies to keep illegal immigrants from climbing over barriers erected along the U.S./Mexican border, Customs and Border Protection officials are planning to add 36-inch coils of "Supermaze" barbed wire atop more than four miles of fencing near San Diego, CA.

The Supermaze razor ribbon is designed for high density, maximum security applications, and has been installed to protect several extremely sensitive NATO facilities in northern Europe.

Each roll of Supermaze barbed wire, which provides 25 feet of coverage, costs about $350, according to one U.S. fence supplier. At that unit price, the full 4-mile stretch would cost more than $300,000 to reinforce.

CBP is looking for a contractor that can install this barbed wire along one and a half miles of fencing immediately, and more than four miles eventually. An all-weather patrol road runs along the south side of the fence and an unimproved maintenance road runs along its north side, said the CBP, in a solicitation it released February 15. CBP did not specify the precise location of these four miles of existing fencing.

Interested vendors can contact , CBP’s contracting officer, at 619-216-4096, by February 20, 2008.
