TSA wants to gather information from the top operators of pipeline systems in the United States, based on their annual through-put of hazardous liquids and natural gas, so the agency can develop plans to inspect what it judges are the "100 most critical pipeline systems."

TSA is undertaking this effort in compliance with the "Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007".

"TSA will request information from the top 125 pipeline systems in terms of annual through-put, and out of these, TSA will make a determination of the top 100 most critical pipeline systems," according to an "emergency clearance request" TSA made to the Office of Management and Budget and posted online on December 26.

TSA plans to consult lists of large pipeline systems, as reported in pipeline trade journals.

TSA plans to identify 125 such systems and estimates it will take each of those pipeline operators about four hours to provide the requested information.

Members of the public who wish to comment on this information request should contact by January 25.
