DHS intends to issue new regulations that will require any prospective buyer or seller of ammonium nitrate -- a fertilizer that can be mixed with fuel oil and used as an explosive -- to register in advance with DHS.

GSN: Government Security News broke the story on Oct. 16 that the Port of Los Angeles had procured a sophisticated cargo scanning X-ray system built in the People’s Republic of China, and that the system will be paid for with a port security grant from DHS.

Police alert for DC biz goes live

DC Police Alert, which enables the Washington Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to send crime-alert text messages in real time to businesses about crimes committed in their neighborhoods, has been launched. The system uses the Roam Secure Alert Network (RSAN), a product of Roam Secure, Inc., DBA Cooper Notification, a unit of Houston, TX-based Cooper Industries, Ltd. According to the company, Cooper Notification has deployed more than 230 RSAN systems in major metropolitan areas across the country, including Orlando, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Houston and San Francisco. DC business owners and employees can subscribe free of charge to DC Police Alert at http://72hours.dc.gov by submitting their contact information and registering their business address.
