CBP plans border fence environmental impact study

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection is inviting public comment on its Draft Environmental Impact Statement, which identifies and assesses potential impacts associated with the proposed construction of a primary pedestrian fence and ancillary patrol roads and other infrastructure in two border segments located within CBP’s San Diego Border Patrol Sector. Comments on the Draft EIS, which can be e-mailed to CBP, must be received by the agency no later than February 19. CBP is also holding an open house, January 17, in San Diego. PROTECTING COMPUTERS - DHS is inviting public comment on its proposed new data collection forms for the Protected Repository for the Defense of Infrastructure Against Cyber Threats (PREDICT). PREDICT manages a centralized repository of products and technologies that will better protect America’s computing infrastructure. BORDER DANGERS - According to a report recently released by the Government Accountability Office, weaknesses in the inspection processes of U.S. Customs and Border Protection increase the potential that terrorists and inadmissible travelers could enter the country. GAO urges CBP to enhance internal controls in the inspection process and provide better training of officers at border crossing points.
