One hundred narcotic detection dogs used by the Border Patrol in Arizona are getting the type of annual medical checkups that millions of uninsured U.S. citizens might envy.

The canine coordinator in the Tucson Sector is looking for a certified veterinarian who can administer "Wellness Examinations" and vaccinate the Border Patrol’s drug-sniffing dogs against rabies, distemper, parvo, hepatitis, parainfluenza and bordatella.

"Any abnormalities, which do not require more extensive medical attention, will be noted, and a maintenance health plan will be discussed," according to a solicitation posted by Customs and Border Protection on October 9.

The complete physical exam for each pooch will include the coat and skin, eyes, ears, nose and throat, and all other obvious organs, as well as the urogenital, neurological and lymphatic systems.

Each dog will also receive a one-year supply of "Heartgard" preventative heartworm medication, said the solicitation.

In case the candidate vets should think of these annual exams as cream-puff assignments, CBP notes that the checkups must also include clipping the dog’s nails, cleaning their teeth and expressing their anal glands.

The winning vet will be selected through a "reverse auction" conducted by FedBid, Inc. Contact Brenda Lopez, the contracting officer, at 520-748-3262 or Responses are due by October 23.
