Pelican Products, Inc., of Torrance, CA, announced the introduction of a remote area lighting system (RALS) designed to enhance mobility for law enforcement and first responders. The Pelican 9450 RALS is a rapid deploying, emergency area light, powered by a 17-hour rechargeable battery that offers up to nine hours of peak light and requires only six hours for a full charge. The system sports an auxiliary socket that can deliver an emergency charge to any device (such as a cell phone or laptop) with a 12 volt power adapter.

UltraVision Security Systems, Inc., of Salem, NH, has unveiled its MicroDetector motion-sensing system which is designed to offer police and other law enforcement agencies a portable, rechargeable and retrievable system that allows monitoring via an off-premise receiver. The MicroDetector is a "force multiplier" in that it eliminates the need for police officers or SWAT team members to remain in "cleared" rooms or spaces. Each unit has a 25-foot omni-directional range, using microwave technology to perform instantaneous motion sensing operations.

New Products: Intelagard backpack boosts fire, hazmat attack ability

The Macaw backpack manufactured by Intelagard, of Broomfield, CO, offers a self-contained portable system to handle fire, hazmat and decontamination tasks. The backpack canister can hold up to five gallons of liquid, and can project foam up to 35 feet powered by a wide range of air cylinders (7.25 inches or less). Users can choose from five attack nozzles and four foaming agents. Rapid response hoses come in seven pre-set sizes as well as customized flat tray lengths.

New Products: Vidiation offers "dirty bomb" detection system

Vidiation, LLC, of Lake Zurich, IL, announced development of a "dirty bomb" detection system, leveraging existing surveillance camera technologies. The Radiation Analytics Detection System, known as V-RADS, uses information generated when high-energy gamma rays and particles interact with image sensors of security cameras. The system, designed for use at primary storage sites of radiological materials, such as hospitals and military facilities, combines passive surveillance and active alerts in its subscription-based software. Vidiation expects to start delivery of V-RADS in early 2008.

Contracts: NIH awards $14 million for anti-anthrax drug development

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, have awarded PharmAthene, Inc., of Annapolis, MD, and Medarex, of Princeton, NJ, a contract valued at up to $13.9 million to develop the drug Valortim for use as an anti-toxin to prevent and treat inhalation anthrax infection. With this contract, which will be incrementally funded through 2009, total government funding committed to Valortim exceeds $24 million.
