If this were a wine and beverage trade publication, the term "CBRNE" might be industry shorthand for "cabernet".

But this is a homeland security trade publication so the acronym "CBRNE" stands for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive detection. That’s quite a mouthful because the CBRNE field is remarkably broad, diverse and ever-changing.

New Products: Alion risk software helps chemical companies meet DHS regs

Alion Science and Technology, based in McLean, VA, unveiled a Web-based risk management software tool designed to help the chemical industry comply with recently enacted DHS regulations. The Alion solution, RAMCAP Plus, characterizes chemical industry processes and system components to identify applicable threats and vulnerabilities. It helps chemical companies perform risk management exercises and reach compliance by enabling those companies to assess their chemical threshold levels. Such compliance is now required under the DHS Chemical Facilities Anti-Terrorism Standard (CFATS) Appendix A, accepted into Final Rule in late November, 2007.

New Products: Speco Technologies expands DVR product family

The latest state-of-the-art Triplex Family digital video recorders from Speco Technologies will be available in February, 2008. The IP-based DVR-4TL offers four channels, MPEG-4 and triplex operation that allows simultaneous recording, live viewing and playback. Amityville, NY-based Speco Technologies also announced that its TN series of DVRs has been expanded to include 8-channel(DVR-8TL) and 16-channel (DVR-16TL) models.

New Products: DHS offers DRASH modular shelter system

DHS Systems LLC, of Orangeburg, NY, now offers a large deployable command and control shelter system, designed for 24/7 operations. The Deployable Rapid Assembly Shelter (DRASH) comes complete with a 25-gallon fuel tank, a 12-ton environmental control unit and a 33 kW generator. The towable J shelter provides 1,120 sq. ft. of space, and weighs 1,600 pounds; the total system (including generator) weighs 11,900 pounds.

New Products: ISSI develops energy-absorbing, movable barrier system

Integrated Security Systems, Inc. (ISSI), of Carrollton, TX, announced that B&B Roadway, a joint venture partner of its B&B Armr subsidiary, has developed a new, energy-absorbing, movable barrier system, designed to bring a vehicle to a full stop by allowing speed to be dissipated without abrupt deceleration. The system, expected to be shipped in the second quarter of 2008, is designed to meet access control requirements of state and local transport agencies, as well as border patrol and law enforcement applications.

New Products: Radiation blocking fabric offers dirty bomb protection

Radiation Shield Technologies, of Miami, FL, announced that new patents have been acquired for its Demron product, the world’s first nuclear radiation-blocking fabric. Demron is an advanced radiopaque nano-polymeric compound fused between layers of fabric, which can in turn be manufactured into lightweight, nuclear radiation-blocking garments, including full-body nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) suits, medical X-ray vests and high energy nuclear suppression blankets.

New Products: IMS shows SPOT satellite personal tracker

Image Management Systems, Inc., of New York, NY, released its SPOT Personal Tracker, which uses the GPS network to track a customer’s exact location and the SPOT Satellite System to transmit vital map positions and status messages to the SPOT call center. The system is designed to assist first responders in remote terrain or emergency conditions. SPOT can also be used to provide back-up communications during natural disasters, such as hurricanes or wild fires.

New Products: TI introduces smart platform for electronic ID

Texas Instruments Inc., headquartered in Dallas, TX, has recently introduced its RF360, the first smart integrated circuit platform to be developed specifically for the contactless government electronic identification market that includes e-passports, national ID cards and other applications. The RF360 platform will easily scale to meet future capabilities of government IDs such as larger amounts of memory for additional biometrics and multiple application credentials, said Texas Instruments.
