Pasternack Debuts New Line of Compact Waveguide Gunn Diode Oscillators

Pasternack's new Gunn diode oscillators incorporate high performance devices and machined aluminum cavities.  Due to the extremely high external Q and temperature compensation mechanism, these oscillators exhibit excellent frequency and power stability, lower phase noise and higher anti-load pulling characteristics. There are two models in this series, the PEWGN1001 model is a K-Band waveguide Gunn oscillator module that generates a center frequency of 24.125 GHz with a tuning range of +/- 1.0 GHz. The PEWGN1000 model generates a Ka band center frequency of 35 GHz with a tuning range of +/- 3.0 GHz.  Both models incorporate self-locking tuning screws.

Performance specifications include phase noise as low as -98 dBc/Hz typical at 100 KHz offset and frequency stability as low as -0.2 MHz/°C maximum. The output power of these oscillators is +10 dBm min with power stability of -0.03 dB/°C maximum. Bias supply is +5 to +5.5 Vdc at 200 to 250 mA typical with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.  The rugged and compact package designs support output frequency ports with fully integrated Mil-grade waveguide flanges of WR-42 UG-595/U for K band and WR-28 UG-599/U for Ka band.

Block MEMS Awarded Phase II of $10.7 Million IARPA Contract to Detect Explosives and other Threats

Block MEMS, LLC (Block) has been awarded Phase II of the Intelligence Advanced Research Programs Activity (IARPA) Program for the standoff detection of explosives and toxic chemical threats. Block was chosen for Phase II in a competitive down-selection process.
Under Phase I, Block successfully demonstrated the ability to detect trace quantities of explosives and other threats on multiple surfaces at 1 and 5 meter standoff distances in a few seconds.
A critical achievement under Phase I has been the development of a benchtop system based on quantum cascade lasers and an innovative chemical detection algorithm. The algorithm combines powerful data processing techniques, simulations of light/material interactions, and modeling of anticipated detected signatures in order to eliminate the effect of clutter, reduce false alarm rates, and improve limits of detection.
The IARPA program is called "Standoff Illuminator for Measuring Absorbance and Reflectance Infrared Light Signatures" (SILMARILS). The contract value of the program is now at $10.7 Million. The program is managed by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

Block MEMS is Selected to Participate in the JE-RDAP $8 Billion Government Contract for the Development and Sale of Chemical and Biological Detection Equipment

Chicago Fire Department Deploys New Breathing Apparatus Technology from MSA

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 14, 2017 -- Global safety equipment manufacturer MSA Safety (NYSE: MSA) today announced the deployment of 1,100 state-of-the-art G1 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) to the Chicago Fire Department (CFD).  The contract was formally awarded in late 2016 and today's deployment represents the completion of a one-year, multi-phase delivery and training process.  The last time Chicago deployed new SCBA technology was on September 11, 2001.

"This latest rollout of new SCBA gear for our fire personnel features the latest technology that will help improve firefighter safety and performance and will in turn increase the safety of our citizens," said Jose Santiago, Fire Commissioner of the Chicago Fire Department.

"When we were designing and building our G1 SCBA – MSA's most technologically advanced, balanced and customizable breathing apparatus ever – our engineers relied heavily on voice-of-customer feedback from thousands of firefighters in the field," said Nish Vartanian, President and Chief Operating Officer. "We are incredibly honored that fire departments like the Chicago Fire Department, the nation's third-largest department and one of the world's oldest and most well-respected, have taken note and entrusted MSA to protect the men and women that keep Chicagoans safe each and every day," he continued.

The G1 SCBA platform, the single largest new product development effort in MSA's 103-year history, was introduced in 2014 and features several breakthrough features designed to improve firefighter safety and effectiveness. For instance, unlike conventional designs, the G1 SCBA has no electronics on its facepiece, making it easier for firefighters to use their full field of view. The SCBA design includes darkness- and smoke-piercing "buddy lights," which provide visible indicators of fellow firefighters and accompanying critical air supply data from any angle, and features improved voice amplification communications.

The unit's unique ergonomic design, combined with an adjustable waist belt and wide shoulder straps, allows more SCBA weight to be carried on a firefighter's hips. Collectively, these features make the SCBA more comfortable to wear for longer periods of time. Additionally, the G1 SCBA includes a "Central Power" feature that powers the entire unit from a single, rechargeable battery compartment, eliminating the need for additional batteries. Also available is an optional integrated thermal imaging camera (iTIC) that's built right into the G1 SCBA's control module.

Battelle Team Wins $23 million in Contract Awards for Microelectronics Security from U.S. Department of Defense

COLUMBUS, Ohio —Battelle will continue its work to help the nation keep counterfeit and untrustworthy integrated circuits and embedded systems out of the military supply chain.

Under the Microelectronics and Embedded Systems Assurance (MESA) contract vehicle, two awards worth $23 million were recently announced for research that will be conducted at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.

The contracts build on Battelle’s experience in conducting basic and applied research on technologies designed to address the increasing threat and proliferation of counterfeit microelectronics and integrated circuits.

All modern defense weapon systems are inherently reliant on microelectronic devices and embedded systems for their operation. Any threat to the integrity of these components can result in significant harm to operations, people and systems.

“We’re excited to leverage our innovative cyber trust and assurance research and solutions in continued support of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) Sensors Directorate,” said Tom Bergman, cyber program manager at Battelle. “Ensuring the security and reliability of military microelectronics and embedded systems against the growing threat is an imperative.”

The work, which will occur over the next four and a half years, will be performed with teammates from MacAulay-Brown, Inc. and the BerrieHill Research Division of Applied Research Associates.

Ouster announces launch of OS1 LIDAR, completes $27M Series A financing round

Ouster, a San Francisco-based developer of high performance LIDAR technology emerged from stealth today, announcing the launch of the company's new OS1 model LIDAR, and $27 million in Series A funding, led by Cox Enterprises. The OS1 represents a step-change in LIDAR sensing technology that is available on the market today, with marked improvements in mass, form factor, and power requirements. The 64-channel LIDAR sensor, which also matches the resolution of the highest performing automotive LIDAR technology on the market today, has begun shipping to customers, and is rapidly ramping up commercial-scale production at a price point approximately 85% below that of its competition.

The company was founded by CEO Angus Pacala, co-founder and former head of engineering of Quanergy Systems, and CTO Mark Frichtl, a prior Quanergy Systems engineer who also spent time at Palantir Technologies, First Solar, and the Apple Special Projects Group. Pacala and Frichtl formed Ouster with the vision to create a high-performance, reliable, and small form factor LIDAR sensor that could be manufactured at a scale and price that would allow autonomous technology to continue its rapid expansion without the cost and manufacturing constraints currently present in the market.

Ouster's Series A funding will primarily be used for the manufacturing and the continued development of its next sensor designs. The company anticipates manufacturing capacity in the tens of thousands of sensors in 2018 based on its current product design, and Ouster's product roadmap supports continually improving resolution, range, and alternative form factors. Additionally, the new capital will support the company's expansion from approximately 40 employees today to 100 employees by summer 2018.
