Battelle Team Wins $23 million in Contract Awards for Microelectronics Security from U.S. Department of Defense

COLUMBUS, Ohio —Battelle will continue its work to help the nation keep counterfeit and untrustworthy integrated circuits and embedded systems out of the military supply chain.

Under the Microelectronics and Embedded Systems Assurance (MESA) contract vehicle, two awards worth $23 million were recently announced for research that will be conducted at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.

The contracts build on Battelle’s experience in conducting basic and applied research on technologies designed to address the increasing threat and proliferation of counterfeit microelectronics and integrated circuits.

All modern defense weapon systems are inherently reliant on microelectronic devices and embedded systems for their operation. Any threat to the integrity of these components can result in significant harm to operations, people and systems.

“We’re excited to leverage our innovative cyber trust and assurance research and solutions in continued support of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) Sensors Directorate,” said Tom Bergman, cyber program manager at Battelle. “Ensuring the security and reliability of military microelectronics and embedded systems against the growing threat is an imperative.”

The work, which will occur over the next four and a half years, will be performed with teammates from MacAulay-Brown, Inc. and the BerrieHill Research Division of Applied Research Associates.

Aurora Demonstrates Fully Autonomous Helicopter

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va., Dec. 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Aurora Flight Sciences conducted a successful demonstration of the company's autonomous helicopter system developed under the Office of Naval Research's (ONR) Autonomous Aerial Cargo Utility System (AACUS) program. Held at Marine Corps Base Quantico's Urban Training Center, the AACUS-Enabled UH-1H (AEH-1) conducted multiple flights, showcasing its ability to autonomously execute re-supply missions in relevant and austere settings.

AACUS is an aircraft-agnostic hardware and software suite which enables a Marine on the ground to request a supply delivery via helicopter from a handheld tablet, requiring no advanced training to operate the system. AEH-1 is fitted with onboard lidar and camera sensors that enable it to detect and avoid obstacles and evaluate the landing zone. The system processes this information to perform onboard mission, route, and path planning to enable autonomous mission execution.

While previous demonstrations have showcased the system's autonomy capabilities and interactions with trained operators, this is the first demonstration in which the aircraft performed cargo and utility missions in an operationally-relevant training environment with Marine interaction. As part of the demonstration, Marines loaded supplies for the aircraft before clearing the autonomy system for autonomous takeoff.

"The Marines' vision for the future of vertical lift operation and support is optionally-piloted aircraft," said AACUS Program Manager Stephen Chisarik. "Aurora's system enables any rotary-wing aircraft to detect and react to hazards in the flight path, and make appropriate adjustments to keep the aircraft safe."

"We've developed this great capability ahead of requirements and it's up to us to determine how to use it," said Lt. Gen. Robert Walsh, commanding general, Marine Corps Combat Development Command. "The young marines today have grown up in a tech-savvy society, which is an advantage. We've got to keep pushing and moving this technology forward."

Aurora has developed multiple technologies under the AACUS program: the digital flight control system which enables the UH-1 to fly autonomously; and the Tactical Autonomous aerial LOgistics System (TALOS) autonomy technology. The AEH-1 was granted a Special Airworthiness Certificate by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in October, allowing the aircraft to operate autonomous with only a safety pilot onboard to monitor the controls.

Today's flights served as the final demonstration to ONR, Department of Defense representatives and other senior officials, the culmination of a highly successful five-year Innovative Naval Prototype (INP) program. Having completed the third and final phase of the program, AACUS will now transition to the Marine Corps for experimentation and potential acquisition.

QinetiQ North America Wins Cradle Lock EPCC Contract with Electric Boat

WALTHAM, Mass., Dec. 12, 2017 -- QinetiQ North America (QNA) has been awarded a contract from General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) to design and develop a cradle lock Electro-Mechanical Actuator Power Conditioner / Controller (EPCC) replacement for the VIRGINIA Class Block V Weapon Stowage and Handling System (WSHS).  The EPCC is a rack of hardware and software designed to control a number of precision actuators and is used throughout the VIRGINIA class fleet.  Similar systems will also exist on the upcoming COLUMBIA class of submarines.

Lockheed Martin Awarded $22 Million for Paveway™ II Plus Laser-Guided Bombs

ARCHBALD, Pa., Dec. 13, 2017 -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) received a $22.8 million contract from the U.S. Air Force on behalf of the U.S. Navy to produce Paveway II Plus Laser Guided Bomb (LGB) kits.

The award includes guidance kits and air foil groups (tail kits) for GBU-12 (500 pound) configuration LGBs, slated for delivery by fourth quarter 2019.

The contract is a follow-on to the U.S. Air Force's $131 million fiscal year 2017 LGB award. In that competition, Lockheed Martin secured the ninth consecutive majority share of available funding in the annual U.S. Air Force competition.

"Paveway II Plus LGBs from Lockheed Martin meet the U.S. Navy's warfighting needs in today's challenging operational environment," said Joe Serra, Precision Guided Systems director at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. Paveway II Plus includes an enhanced guidance package that improves accuracy over legacy LGBs. Lockheed Martin has been a qualified supplier of Paveway II LGB kits since 2001, and has delivered more than 100,000 kits to customers.

In addition to the Paveway II Plus LGB, Lockheed Martin's 350,000-square-foot production facility in Archbald, Pennsylvania, is the sole provider of the Enhanced Laser Guided Training Round and Paragon™ direct attack munition. Ouster announces launch of OS1 LIDAR, completes $27M Series A financing round

Ouster, a San Francisco-based developer of high performance LIDAR technology emerged from stealth today, announcing the launch of the company's new OS1 model LIDAR, and $27 million in Series A funding, led by Cox Enterprises. The OS1 represents a step-change in LIDAR sensing technology that is available on the market today, with marked improvements in mass, form factor, and power requirements. The 64-channel LIDAR sensor, which also matches the resolution of the highest performing automotive LIDAR technology on the market today, has begun shipping to customers, and is rapidly ramping up commercial-scale production at a price point approximately 85% below that of its competition.

Statement By Secretary Nielsen On Attempted Terror Attack In New York

WASHINGTON – Today, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen spoke with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner James O’Neill regarding the details of the attempted terrorist attack in New York City. Secretary Nielsen released the following statement on the Department’s role in coordinating a federal response to terror-related incidents.

Process Doppleganger - malware threat to Windows

Process Hollowing is a technique first introduced years ago by attackers to thwart the mitigation capabilities of security products. However, most of today's solutions are able to detect and prevent such notorious attacks. In this talk, we will present a new technique, dubbed Process Doppelgänging, which has similar advantages but is much harder to detect - let alone prevent. Moreover, we will expose inherent limitations in the implementations of modern AV/NGAV scanning engines.



Most modern evasion techniques rely on complex memory manipulation in order to avoid AV/NGAV scan engines. Instead, we wanted to take advantage of the implementation of the Windows loader, and abuse it to load our code, while keeping it away from the prying eyes of security products. Moreover, the code will never be saved to any file on disk, making it invisible to most recording tools such as modern EDRs.



Doppelgänging works by utilizing two key distinct features together to mask the loading of a modified executable. By using NTFS transactions, we make changes to an executable file that will never actually be committed to disk. We will then use undocumented implementation details of the process loading mechanism to load our modified executable, but not before rolling back the changes we made to the executable. The result of this procedure is creating a process from the modified executable, while deployed security mechanisms in the dark.
