Washington, DC, February 29 - TerraGo announced today the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has deployed TerraGo Edge for the inspection of flood protection infrastructure including levees, dams and reservoirs.
The DOTD’s Public Works and Water Resources Division inspects over 1,100 miles of levees, four times, each and every year. The legacy inspection system was a custom-built application developed by an engineering services firm, which utilized Trimble® YUMA® ruggedized tablets. Over time, the system became less reliable and database updates were cumbersome and problematic. To truly fix the system would have meant more custom development services and other expenses. Each of the six YUMA tablets, fully configured, ran around $6,000. The annual software maintenance was also expensive at around $18,000, which did nothing to improve the reliability of the system.
“We really wanted a cloud-based system, so we wouldn’t need to maintain a database server on-site. And if we could deploy an Android solution, those tablets would only cost us about $200, so the hardware would be pennies on the dollar. We could break and replace a lot of Android tablets compared to a traditional, ruggedized GPS tablet at $6,000”, said Doug Taylor, Director of Levees, Dams and Reservoirs at the DOTD.
After a series of successful field trials, DOTD knew they had found a mobile solution that met their requirements across the board for reliability, ease of use and customizability, all with a cloud-based database solution at a fraction of the cost.
TerraGo Edge’s customizable forms mean the DOTD never has to pay a software services fee for modifying a hard-coded solution again. They can design their own forms, maps and workflows, flexibly changing them whenever needed to improve the speed and quality of inspections and maintenance.
“Honestly, my favorite part about TerraGo Edge is that it’s just easy to use”, said Taylor. “It’s easy to use in the field and it’s easy to get information and reports out whenever we need them. The challenge is always how to figure out the right forms and inspection workflow. We have hundreds of codes and things change over time. With Edge, we can customize our forms and process today, and know we can adjust things in the future. ”
TerraGo develops software applications and mobile apps that make it easy for our customers to collect data, share information and work together anywhere, any time. From sharing feature-rich maps and imagery to deploying on-demand apps for a mobile workforce, TerraGo builds intuitive products that enable collaboration from any place on the planet.
Founded in 2005, TerraGo invented the industry’s most widely adopted geospatial collaboration technology with its innovative GeoPDF products and is revolutionizing field data collection with its TerraGo Edge mobile platform.
TerraGo’s customers include the world’s leading defense and intelligence departments, government agencies, non-profits and commercial enterprises in every industry, with over 2,000 global customers based in over 70 countries and all 50 US states.

Salt Lake City, UT, March 8 - SpotterRF, the leading manufacturer of compact surveillance radar (CSR), today announced completion of the world’s first Spotter radar protected ski resort road system by GEOPRAEVENT in Zermatt, Switzerland. The SpotterRF CSR monitors two infamous avalanche gullies along the Swiss Alps road leading to the renowned village. The unique 24/7 two-tier perimeter line system triggers automatic road closure at the mouth of the canyon when it detects a snow avalanche threatening motorists on the only road leading to Zermatt.
Lorenz Meier, CEO for GEOPRAEVENT states, “We chose SpotterRF because of the large radar coverage, small size, low-power and the possibility to implement its own algorithms on the raw data. They're a great team to work with. Our customer has repeatedly stated that he is thrilled by the system.”
With a range of 2000 meters and a horizontal opening angle of 90°, the radar surveys an area of more than two square kilometers. When triggered, the system reacts within seconds, immediately closing the road by means of traffic lights and barriers.
Local authorities receive prioritized notification. Live cameras installed along the road allow them to check on the situation immediately — even at night, as all cameras are equipped with infrared floodlights. If the avalanche has not reached the road, authorities can reopen it from their computers or smart phones within minutes.
“Global demand for SpotterRF compact surveillance radar is extending our reach into new applications and industries,” states Logan Harris, SpotterRF CEO. “Our Swiss partner, GEOPRAEVENT did a marvelous job designing and adding their own proprietary algorithms to our Spotter radar to create a system that responds in seconds to protect motorists traveling this curvy mountain roads.”

Hamburg, Germany, March 9 - DERMALOG, the biometrics innovation leader, is providing its identification technology to make a successful contribution towards combating fraud in Nigeria. Recently, the West African country's government identified that more than 23,000 public service employees either did not exist with their recorded name or had been receiving their salary unlawfully.
The campaign against corruption and maladministration launched by the Nigerian Government under President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2015 has resulted in the removal of numerous jobs from public service payrolls.
Of the 312,000 public servants that were audited, 23,306 were found to have received their salary unlawfully or did not even exist. Some of them even received payments from several sources at the same time. 7% of the audited government personell were not existing or were double-paid.
These cases of fraud were identified with the help of the automatic biometric identification system (ABIS) of the Nigerian banks, supplied by the German company DERMALOG. A country-wide biometric system has been implemented for 23 Nigerian banks and for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2014 and 2015, identifying bank customers by means of fingerprints and face recognition before they open or access a bank account. Under this system, every customer receives an individual number (Bank Verification Number or "BVN"). More than 24 million bank customers have been registered until today - and their bank accounts are also secured by DERMALOG´s innovative biometrics.
Besides these achievements, the BVN system has now helped to find and eliminate the 23,306 non-existing public servants. This permits the country to achieve monthly savings of 10.5 million euros and is making a sustainable contribution to the positive development of the Nigerian state.
DERMALOG Identification Systems GmbH, based in Hamburg, is the largest German biometrics manufacturer and is known as biometrics innovation leader.
A team of scientists is constantly working on "Automatic Biometric Identification Systems" (ABIS and AFIS) including the latest fingerprint live scanners as well as biometric border control systems and biometric ID cards and other documents. "FingerLogin", "FingerPayment" and "FingerBanking" are DERMALOG products, as well as automatic face and iris identification.
In addition to Germany and Europe, DERMALOG's main markets are in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. The company has now delivered its technologies and solutions to more than 140 government agencies in 75 countries.
DERMALOG also offers biometric solutions for banks and ATM manufacturers. The world´s largest biometrics bank project (50 Million USD) saw 23 banks and the Central Bank of Nigeria provided with a DERMALOG ABIS, which prevents double identities among bank customers and guarantees best possible KYC processes. Numerous ATMs worldwide have been equipped with DERMALOG´s fingerprint technology replacing insecure PINs.

Charlotte, NC, March 3 - Duke Energy announced its third solar project to be built in 2016, with the 6-megawatt Woodleaf Solar Facility slated for Rowan County, N.C."We see 2016 shaping up to be active year for Duke Energy-owned solar projects," said Rob Caldwell, senior vice president, Distributed Energy Resources. "Our customers want us to actively pursue renewable energy, and we are delivering on that desire."Today, Duke Energy filed with the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) on a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) - needed for the plant to be built. CPCN's were filed earlier for projects in Davie and Union counties.
"We appreciate Duke Energy's continued investment in Rowan County with the Woodleaf project," said Greg Edds, chairman of the Rowan County Commissioners. "Duke Energy has made significant investments in the community to meet the energy needs of the region and we look forward to a continuing partnership with them in Rowan County."
The Woodleaf Solar Facility will be located near the intersection of Highway 801 and Old U.S. Highway 70 in the community of Woodleaf in Rowan County. It will occupy roughly 50 acres of land already owned by Duke Energy.
If approved by the NCUC, the project will begin construction in the second quarter of 2016, with completion targeted for the end of the year.
The project will be owned and operated by Duke Energy Carolinas and will help meet North Carolina's Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard.
Duke Energy continues to invest heavily in solar energy in North Carolina as part of its effort to deliver increasingly clean energy to its customers. The company is about to complete 141 megawatts of projects announced in 2015 – in Bladen, Duplin, Onslow and Wilson counties.
For 2016, Duke Energy utilities have announced 81 megawatts of planned solar power – already more than 50 percent of what was done in 2015. This aggressive expansion by Duke Energy companies has led North Carolina to be ranked fourth nationally for overall installed solar.
Over the past eight years, Duke Energy, through its regulated and commercial businesses, has invested more than $4 billion in solar and wind across the country. The company plans to invest about $3 billion in renewable energy over the next five years.
As a point of reference, one megawatt of large-scale solar is equivalent to about 200 typical residential rooftop systems. The number varies by state and conditions.
