In response to the dark skies initiative and wind industry demand, DeTect has developed its HARRIER VWS.
The system provides continuous 360-degree surveillance of the airspace around a windfarm from the ground level to above aircraft flight altitudes, automatically activating obstruction lighting when aircraft are detected at a defined outer perimeter.
The HARRIER VWS has advantages in performance and safety which are not available on any other VWS that include longer-range warning of aircraft, lower cost of acquisition and operation, ease of installation, and multi-function capability (bird mortality risk mitigation), says the company in a news release issued on Oct. 17.
The first HARRIER VWS for the U.S. has been ordered by a major U.S. wind developer and will be installed and operating by year-end.
For windfarm airspace monitoring and obstruction lighting activation, one to three HARRIER unit sensors are typically installed around the perimeter of the windfarm to ensure full 360-degree detection of approaching aircraft, says the company on its Website.
