MaxVision, of Madison, AL introduced a new portable biometrics device at the Border Security Expo in Phoenix last week.
The BPac -- or Biometric Portable Acquisition Camera -- is a rugged, pocket size device that allows suspects to be photographed and identified instantaneously in the field.
“It is a brand new unit,” says Ira Tabankin, director of biometrics. “And most of it was designed with input from the people who are going to use it. The military had a big role, as did the Department of Homeland Security and a number of first responders. That is why it’s so small, it fits in cargo pocket of tactical pants, can be held in one hand and used in freezing weather, extreme heart or pouring rain.”
Replete with facial recognition software, a fingerprint scanner and iris camera, the BPac weighs less than three pounds and allows law enforcement to run searches based on state, local and national data.
“The unit is only a little larger then a paperback book and it is very rugged. You can drop it on a four foot steel plate or submerge it in salt water for 30 minutes while it is on,” Tabankin adds.
“Plus, it is extremely easy to use. I could put it in your hand without a manual and you could use it, it is that automated.”
